Happy days are here again: Cure for flu found! Vaccine works on all strains...
and will not require a yearly booster. It is also produced in a highly potent method, which allows 10,000 doses to be produced from two pints of vaccine.

This means that Bird Flu and other Flus may be a thing of the past!!!!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/health/healthmain.html?in_article_id=425227&in_page_id=1774

"British scientists are on the verge of producing a revolutionary flu vaccine that works against all major types of the disease.

Described as the 'holy grail' of flu vaccines, it would protect against all strains of influenza A - the virus behind both bird flu and the nastiest outbreaks of winter flu.

Just a couple of injections could give long-lasting immunity - unlike the current vaccine which has to be given every year.

The brainchild of scientists at Cambridge biotech firm Acambis, working with Belgian researchers, the vaccine will be tested on humans for the first time in the next few months."

:woohoo:

but that will probably take a long time.

4. Great news for people who get the flu.
I haven't gotten it in at least ten years. Believe it or not, I attribute this to vaporizing and smoking lots of MMJ. It boosts my immunities. I can't remember the last time I got sick. The same is true for many friends. I have several decades of anecdotal evidence to back up my claim.

11. I hear you - I keep Pork out of my diet and it seems
To me that all my major meat eater friends come down with the nasties -
even those who get flu vaccines.

It's nice being helathy, ain't it?

15. I love meat
and I get sick maybe once every 18-24 months for about 3-4 days and thats it.

I exercise being in the military and dont run and lather myself up in antibiotics everytime I may come into contact with germs and my belief is that my immune system is a little more "robust" because I dont try and avoid all possible contamination.

Obviouisly I still wash my hands at the appropriate times lol.

29. Me too
I hardly ever get sick. I don't believe susceptibility to a virus has anything to do with meat eating. I avoid anti-bactierial products, believing that they just create drug-resistant strains of bacteria that are much worse. In any case, they would be useless against virii, I believe. Haven't had the flu in forever. And I do not lead a particularly healthy lifestyle. I just think my immune system is strong for whatever reason AND I am rarely around kids, who seem to be little germ factories.

I have a daughter with Type 1 diabetes and a son with asthma. I worry about how a bird-flu type of pandemic would affect them.

how many times have we heard scientists are on the verge of curing cancer or the common cold or brain injury or heart disease and yet somehow they never quite do it

when the vaccine is released, i'll be excited, i'm worn out w. caring about "on the verge"

16. Vaccines for flu don't "cure" anything. They PREVENT.
"Cure" is my least favorite word in medicine. It is SOOOOOOOOO abused and misunderstood.

Longing for death on a massive scale is hardly a progressive value.

23. Much as my sinusitis and I wish for this to be true ...
... the Daily Mail has a shockingly bad record when it comes to health reporting. It treats pseudoscience and speculation as fact, promotes quack cures, and propogates unfounded health scares that end up killing kids.

Ben Goldacre has that story:

24. I was going to post pretty much the same as Taxloss..
for that matter, the Daily Mail has a shockingly bad record when it comes to ANY reporting.

However, there may be something in it; I will try and find out more. It would be *great* if true; though I suspect that, even if it is, it will be some years before we really enjoy the benefits, given all the tests and clinical trials that will be needed to prove that it's effective.

27. If it's true, it's excellent news.
Nevertheless, it looks a lot like a press release has been treated as fact by a newspaper that values headlines over public health.

... so it probably gives you BSE and means your head falls off if you go out in the wrong kind of rain.

Other than that it's fine.

Best leave these things to sensible people like the French.
