4. I don't think that's so nutty a possibility. With the extreme degredation...

...of Iraqi society, the polarization of various factions, the utter turmoil that is Iraqi life today, I think it's not such a far-fetched opinion that if Saddam were somehow released he would be able to regain control at least of some part of the country and use his ruthless methods to attempt to take over whatever the remaining area is.

Whew.

Anyway, if you have people in Iraq who feel they're likely to be killed at least three times on the way to a job which is in peril, to feed a family which they might return home to, to find butchered....I think the Saddam option doesn't seem so unreasonable.

In fact, absurdly enough, I think the U.S. presence in Iraq, how we've handled things, how our troops have handled themselves, etc. have all contributed to increase the popularity of Saddam as a solution of sorts to escape the misery.

The most amusing thing is that the (R) doesn't even bother with some bromide about how Saddam's execution will "help" (something, anything) in Iraq. Nope. Best argument: "If we kill him, they can't put him back into power!"

That's mostly true, heh heh. I will never forget that John Ashcroft lost a senate race to a dead man (Mel Carnahan) before being picked up by the Boosh administration. Dead for a few weeks, IIRC, before the election.
