(R) on CNN: At least killing Saddam means he won't be put back in power. |
|
"At least it stops one nightmare scenario, if we pull out of Iraq like SOME PEOPLE in this city want us to do, the Iraqis can't put Saddam back in power."

2. Yeah we'll just replace him with a Dictator who has our |

best interest in mind. Like Saddam did before he became Public Enemy #1...

3. No, it will be some other ruthless thug who'll understand that |
|
a country divided along strong cultural/religious/social ethnic lines requires a heavy-handed approach to keep the country from imploding into civil war.

4. I don't think that's so nutty a possibility. With the extreme degredation... |
|
...of Iraqi society, the polarization of various factions, the utter turmoil that is Iraqi life today, I think it's not such a far-fetched opinion that if Saddam were somehow released he would be able to regain control at least of some part of the country and use his ruthless methods to attempt to take over whatever the remaining area is.
Whew.
Anyway, if you have people in Iraq who feel they're likely to be killed at least three times on the way to a job which is in peril, to feed a family which they might return home to, to find butchered....I think the Saddam option doesn't seem so unreasonable.
In fact, absurdly enough, I think the U.S. presence in Iraq, how we've handled things, how our troops have handled themselves, etc. have all contributed to increase the popularity of Saddam as a solution of sorts to escape the misery.

5. I don't think it's a nutty possibility at all! |

But one doesn't execute somebody so they won't be in charge, does one?

7. Oh sorry! I misunderstood the angle in the message you posted. |
|
The most amusing thing is that the (R) doesn't even bother with some bromide about how Saddam's execution will "help" (something, anything) in Iraq. Nope. Best argument: "If we kill him, they can't put him back into power!"
That's mostly true, heh heh. I will never forget that John Ashcroft lost a senate race to a dead man (Mel Carnahan) before being picked up by the Boosh administration. Dead for a few weeks, IIRC, before the election.

We must remember that this is entertainment more than anything else.
