official: saddam to be executed 10:00 pm est
Report: Saddam to hang at 10pm ET
Official: Saddam to Be Executed Tonight
Dec 29, 5:42 PM (ET)
By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA and QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The official witnesses to Saddam Hussein's impending execution gathered Friday in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone in final preparation for his hanging, as state television broadcast footage of his regime's atrocities.

The Iraqi government readied all the necessary documents, including a "red card" - an execution order introduced during Saddam's dictatorship. As the hour of his death approached, Saddam received two of his half brothers in his cell on Thursday and was said to have given them his personal belongings and a copy of his will.

Najeeb al-Nueimi, a member of Saddam's legal team in Doha, Qatar, said he too requested a final meeting with the deposed Iraqi leader. "His daughter in Amman was crying, she said 'Take me with you,'" al-Nueimi said late Friday. But he said their request was rejected.

An adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Saddam would be executed before 6 a.m. Saturday, or 10 p.m. Friday EST. Also to be hanged at that time were Saddam's half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court, the adviser said.

1. We are in a strange time.
Sometimes it seems kind of nice to turn off the electronic world, and just go for a walk in the woods.

3. As much as I despise Saddam Hussein, this entire scenario makes me want to vomit.
It's orchestrated for maximum political gain. That's a crime, a sin, whatever you want to call it.

Yes, a walk in the woods would be very nice, indeed. Or a hike in the mountains.

10. Strange days ....

I keep thinking of the song by The Doors .....

Strange days have found us
Strange days have tracked us down
They're going to destroy
Our casual joys
We shall go on playing
Or find a new town

Yeah!

Strange eyes fill strange rooms
Voices will signal their tired end
The hostess is grinning
Her guests sleep from sinning
Hear me talk of sin
And you know this is it

Yeah!

Strange days have found us
And through their strange hours
We linger alone
Bodies confused
Memories misused
As we run from the day
To a strange night of stone

8. Nature has done it for us here in Santa Fe today
We have 18 inches of snow, and it's still coming down. Feels like the world has gone away!

9. While I am in no
hurry to be snowed-in, there is something very nice about 18 inches of fresh snow. It becomes silent at night. A wonderful time to take a peaceful walk!

20. Yes, a walk...
...but I'd better hurry because its still snowing, I'm five feet tall, and I begin to have the perspective that my German Shepherds have when faced with snow encroaching on their, ahem, private parts! :)

you are right. A nice walk in a beautiful woods. To bad the electronic world is so given to this human fabrication ot revenge and killing. I find this whole thing gross and rather un human. Though human kind probably don't deserve the name as so many are happy to kill to eat when they really don't have to. (Sorry about my vegetarian mode of thinking.) I spent the whole day talking about Love and Compassion but I probably should have started talking 6 years ago or maybe 60 years ago This is a disturbing time but a time to press for great CARE beyond killing.

11. I feel the same as I did after the shock and awe speech, sick.
There is this twisted fear and apprehension. Nothing good can come of this. All this death. It has to end, killing in the name of good and evil. Nothing is justified.
I am ashamed and afraid. Bush and Co. are pushing the gates of hell wide open.
The only thing left to save our country's soul is to impeach. I truly believe it's the only way we will ever come out of this darkness.
The world is ready to move on without us. They are starting to look beyond America. I cry for my country.

No kidding.

The whole business makes me want to throw up.

Shit. There's an NBC correspondent in Baghdad, reporting live on MSNBC, with that nice little Christmas tree visible just over his shoulder. So perverse.

This whole sordid affair is just incredibly offensive.

5. Geeze
I always watch the news when I get home (8:30 EST). It's my time to sit and play with my snakes. I'm not sure I'll be able to watch the news tonight. I wonder if there will be any reruns of Simpsons episodes on that I can watch.

17. How does hanging Saddam help either Iraq or the United States?
It simply reinforces the barbaric notion that state murder somehow corrects an injustice.

It reinforces the Old Testament cliché, I suppose; an eye for an eye.

The death penalty is inhuman and indecent. Worse, it erases forever the true intent of the perpetrator of the crimes for which the person was executed for in the first place.

By the same logic, shouldn't Donald Rumsfeld be hanged as well? After all, under the Reagan administration Rummy sold Saddam Hussein the weapons required to carry out the crimes Saddam was convicted of committing.

Saddam is much more valuable alive and incarcerated. Same with Timothy McVeigh.

Killing by government fiat burns down the libraries of knowledge these men possess. Now we'll never know what was truly in their hearts and minds.

Alas, pot smokers and petty thieves are incarcerated instead.

What a wonderful world.

19. The whole dog and pony show is what's sickening...
I personally think that Saddam should just be incarcerated for life. What is his execution going to prove? Other than that we are a barbaric civilization.
