100 sharks swarm beach in Florida

December 29, 2006

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- About 100 sharks were spotted Tuesday close to shore along the St. Lucie County coast, authorities said.

A sheriff's helicopter was on a routine patrol when the sharks, believed to be bull sharks, were seen feeding at 10 a.m. near the Fort Pierce jetty, St. Lucie County Sheriff's Deputy Garry Wilson told Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers.

"If there is anyone close to them, we warn them over the P.A. system," Wilson said. "Usually, the sharks are just feeding, chasing bait fish close to shore. But unfortunately, anyone near them could be accidentally mistaken for food."

The beach remained open.

3. Bull Sharks can be very bad dudes
You would be suprised to see how many sharks there are and there close proximity to swimmers close to the shoreline - try flying in a an ultra light over the coast sometime. It has been several years now since young Jessy Armagast (sp?)was attacked by a bull shark near shore on Pensacola Beach. His uncle, a hero, grabbed the bull shark by the tail and pulled the shark onto the beach and then removed Jessy's arm from the sharks mouth where it was later re-attached (successfully) at the hospital. Pretty much, the most feared of all sharks in this area.
