A huge Canadian ice shelf 500 miles (800 kilometers) from the North Pole has disintegrated, leaving a large floating island of ice stranded 30 miles (48 kilometers) offshore, scientists reported yesterday.

The entire 25.5-square-mile (66-square-kilometer) Ayles Ice Shelf broke free from the northern coast of Ellesmere Island on August 13, 2005 (map of Canada).

Spain's Bears Stop Hibernating

Dec. 22, 2006 — Bears appear to have stopped hibernating in Spain's northern mountains, according to Spanish scientists who blame climate change for the behavior.



CNN) -- Polar bears may be listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act because of a loss of habitat that jeopardizes their survival, the Interior secretary said Wednesday.

"Polar bears are one of nature's ultimate survivors, able to live and thrive in one of the world's harshest environments," said Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne in a teleconference with reporters.

"But we are concerned the polar bears' habitat may literally be melting," he said.

Species extinction rate speeding up

Scientists say wildlife extinction rates are soaring. The die-off, they claim, threatens the planet's web of life or biodiversity which sustains farming, forestry and oceans. At a Paris meeting last week scientists called on world leaders to catalog and save species. One of the speakers was University of Minnesota ecology professor David Tilman. He's known around the world for his research showing the effects of human activity on the environment.

I find it so strange that the discussions on boards about policy and government relegate the TRUE issues of life and death that would appear to matter MOST to the Citizens to the back pages and consider them "sub-issues."

and Gore was talking about global warming on Oprah.

Where the internet differs from M$M, IMO, is that you have blogs and commentary by people with PhDs - like Alterman, Atrios, Juan Cole, Brad Delong, etc. Whereas on TV and in newspapers and magazines you get the faux intellectualism of someone like George Will or Tony Snow. Or even worse the ignorance and dishonesty of Billo and Limbaugh.

Lamentably, GD tends to follow whatever the M$M issue du jour is, and as it gets bigger, I am afraid that the more intelligent and eloquent writers will get drowned out by the masses and personal baiting and sniping.

But is there alot to discuss on global warming? It's old news, and the articles just further confirm what the choir already knows. What, however, are we supposed to do about it? Push for mass transit? Car-pool? Turn down the thermostat? Compost and recycle? Need to find some articles about answers.

I just find it absurd to read hundreds of threads decrying the TeeVee people, yet they give incredibly detailed transcripts and become bloated fixtures with dozens of dupes discussing every nuance of Tweety or Anderson. If they are so awful, why drag that shit to a discussion board? Most people come online to get away from the propaganda.

Anyway, yes there is a lot to discuss about global warming. It should be the number one issue in political discussion. It should have been the number one issue for the last three presidential elections. The apathetic, head-in-the-sand or cynical dismissal of the past twenty years is why things are escalating so fast now. I know why the rich fucks ignore Kyoto, etc. They have their guarded fortresses to escape to when the shit really hits the fan. But for liberals to bicker about the issue du jour of pretty much ZERO consequence to our lives, instead of asking why the Dems don't have Environmental Issues at the top of their platform, is sad.

Schools, healthcare, abortion, capital gains tax breaks, gun control .. none of these will matter worth a damn when multiple cities face what New Orleans did last year. The huge increase in the cost of food, the massive influx of migrants escaping war and flooding, the coming plagues .. these are not far into the future halfway around the world. They will happen HERE, soon.

Perhaps it would be beneficial for our "leaders" to prepare people as opposed to distracting people with their pet pony tricks.
