President Bush's Statement on Execution of Saddam Hussein
President Bush's Statement on Execution of Saddam Hussein

In Focus: Renewal in Iraq

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

Today, Saddam Hussein was executed after receiving a fair trial -- the kind of justice he denied the victims of his brutal regime.

Fair trials were unimaginable under Saddam Hussein's tyrannical rule. It is a testament to the Iraqi people's resolve to move forward after decades of oppression that, despite his terrible crimes against his own people, Saddam Hussein received a fair trial. This would not have been possible without the Iraqi people's determination to create a society governed by the rule of law.

Saddam Hussein's execution comes at the end of a difficult year for the Iraqi people and for our troops. Bringing Saddam Hussein to justice will not end the violence in Iraq, but it is an important milestone on Iraq's course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain, and defend itself, and be an ally in the War on Terror.

We are reminded today of how far the Iraqi people have come since the end of Saddam Hussein's rule - and that the progress they have made would not have been possible without the continued service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.

Many difficult choices and further sacrifices lie ahead. Yet the safety and security of the American people require that we not relent in ensuring that Iraq's young democracy continues to progress.

5. Oh, I see someone finally woke him up from his nappy-poo...
...after having explicitly said not to wake him up whenever Saddam was executed (if the BBC's reporting is accurate).

13. Hilarious isn't it?
Also, the English and presentation is too good to be him. I do hope they brief him on what he said in the morning so he doesn't contradict himself at his next news conference.

Do they keep that close an eye on him?

You know that he is really in his room watching tv.

15. He even did an artist's rendering of the hanging

I'm totally disgusted with this whole affair. Sure Saddam needed to be punished, but was 3,000 American deaths and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis worth it?

14. Saddam's trial was deemed unfair by many countries
But W doesn't care about anyone else's ruling of fairness.

But they don't care. They're the ones shredding the Constitution.

19. Keyword sacrifice
That means hundreds of thousands more dead Iraqis and thousands of U.S. soldiers dead. Meanwhile, Bush won't sacrifice anything. That would require him to actually think.

20. I have to admit, when it comes to hanging a head of state....
Saddam Hussein would not be my first choice. Probably not even my second. Or third.

21. I had to double-check that wasn't from whitehouse.org
It takes a hell of a lot of nerve to lecture about fair trials while we're holding people indefinitely without charges or access to lawyers at Guantanamo.

I don't know if that's more or less outrageous than talking about all the "progress" the Iraqi people have made since Saddam was removed from power. WTF.

25. VERY good point. Tell us all about the art of the fair trial, george.
Now that you've thoughtfully relieved us of Habeas Corpus and other Constitutional protections. Yep, there's the last word on the "fair trial." From the inspiration for all things "fair and balanced" (so I guess he really DOES know - :sarcasm: ). :eyes:
