What's Molly Ivins up to?
Just wondering if anyone knows what (if anything) is going on with Molly Ivins. She hasn't had a new column in over a month, and yesterday's was written by Susan Estrich. No comment by the editor or anyone about her being on sabbatical or vacation. She's battling cancer, so I was wondering if anyone heard anything.

1. The Arizona Star
included this:
Editor's note: Columnist Molly Ivins, whose column usually runs Saturdays on these pages, is taking a break from her column while she undergoes the latest round of cancer treatment. She plans to resume her column in January.

I hope she's well and can come back next month like she planned. Same for Roger Ebert.

3. Yeah
It'll break my heart the day she dies. I hope she's keeping her spirits up, it's important for her health. All these years you could tell she's had a genuine fondness for all politicians -- they amused, exasperated, and sometimes angered her, but never left her bitter. But of late though, it seems like Bushco has wrung that out of her.

4. To be honest, it doesn't sound good...
This would already be her second relapse. Generally, each time there's a recurrence, the likelihood of a successful outcome to the fight goes down dramatically.

Knowing Molly, I'm sure she'd say something like "you're going to lose in the end no matter what you do, so you might as well enjoy the battle."

5. "Acknowledge the *diagnosis*, but not the "prognosis"!
That's a quote from Deepak Chopra that I always keep in mind. I've had two friends who had cancer in recent years. One went the traditional chemo/radiation route and lived for six years before losing her battle.

The other, when advised to have a double mastectomy, said, "No way." She and her husband are friends of Gary Null, and her husband is a health writer. She went through a three-month dietary/meditation/supplements routine that her husband devised for her, and has been cancer-free for a long time.

I'm aware that these things don't work for everyone. The first friend, above, had very aggressive ovarian cancer, so there's no way of knowing what her chances might have been with something other than radiation and chemotherapy. In her case, she was caught in a dichotemy between being a yoga practitioner/vegetarian, and a biochemistry lecturer. I often felt she knew too much about all the latest protocols from mainstream medicine. I am in no way advocating ignoring the medical profession in favor of trying to meditate away a cancer. It's just that there are so many stories of people who decide to take their chances with alternatives, and come out in good shape.

It's amazing what the mind can do to heal the body. Molly Ivins strikes me as a person whose spirit is so strong that she will use every tool at her disposal to keep on keeping on.

6. From my local Democracy Watch
I got this in a local email today, I've got absolutely no idea whether Rothschild's info is accurate or not.

Molly Ivins is struggling with intractable cancer. Matthew Rothschild of The Progressive magazine has offered to forward her cards and letters.

If you have enjoyed Molly's keen wit and practical wisdom over the
years, please send her a card to let her know.
