PORTLAND DU MEETUP - Dec 30th - Keep Kicked
Hear Ye Hear Ye !

It has been deemed good and proper to enjoy good beer, decent food and
the wonderfully witty banter of intelligent DUers (like yourselves)

DU Meetup at the New Old Lompoc .... Saturday 4PM

1616 NW 23rd, @ NW Raleigh, 4 blocks north of Northrup

Dress for 40 Degree weather - It should be dry, with mild winds ...

Bus Riders - Take the Streetcar to Marshall and 23rd - Walk 4 blocks north on 23rd - On the right past Raleigh

*Please Keep Kicked for today* (That will be a tall order, so PLEASE help)

Great, friendly neighborhood bar that has it all. Booze, great microbrew, television, smoking, non-smoking, and a great menu. Try Lompoc for a great mellow lunch and justify a beer with their exciting craft-brewed selections. In summer, don't miss the patio (voted "Best Outdoor Seating" on citysearch.com,) and in winter head out back to their heated enclosed patio for Tues night Trivia. Whether or not you still have your hair, join "The Bald Guy Brigade" and get a tee, mug and 10% off everything for a year, while supporting "Locks of Love" at the same time. Sundays: The Off-Key Bluegrass Jam, 1-4pm. Mondays: $2 Lompoc pints, all hours. Tuesdays: Legends of Leisure trivia night, 8 p.m. $1 off all mixed drinks 4-7pm M-F & all day Sat & Sun. $2 Lompocs 10pm-close, every night, too

The Scene
The low-key atmosphere at this neighborhood brewpub is a refreshing change from the bevy of trendy shops and restaurants that line the rest of 23rd Avenue. Named after a bar in an old Mae West movie, the Lompoc has been crafting its own brews since the mid-nineties, and features a variety of ales and lagers with memorable names. The John Outhouse Special Bitter, for example, is an English-style beer, and tastes much better than it sounds.

The Draw
The beautiful, vine-covered patio out back is reason enough to visit. When the weather cooperates, everyone heads outside to eat and drink alfresco style. Complement your libations with a full menu of pub snacks, burgers, sandwiches and salads. Every day from 4pm to 7pm, happy hour features $2.50 pints and $1 off cocktails. And stop by for a $2 bloody mary every Sunday Bloody Sunday.

8. Hey There MaryBear ....
It will be a pleasure to meet you both ...

Im not sure how many others will show up, but there should be a few at least ...

We have never been to the New Old Lompoc, but the reviews are decent, and the area is rich with bars and restaurants and stuff ....

I will call you about two hours prior and give you any guidance you might need ...

See you then ...

BTW: .. Dress warm ... Gloves, hat and coat might be a good idea, just in case ....

18. Thanks, Trajan!
Do you have any idea what parking is like in that area? We're still in exploring mode so we're driving rather than using public transit for the time being.

Google maps is giving us weird directions - thereby explaining why we have AAA hard copy maps. LOL Hmm, I think I'll check MapQuest, too. Maybe their directions will make more sense.

Oh, and hey, if you're doing a head count, Greyhound1966 and I are the "we" to which he and I keep referring. Thought you should know so you count us as 2 rather than 4.

20. Parking is usually a problem near there ...
NW 23rd is pretty popular, but this only means that you may have to find a spot within a one block radius ... It can be crowded, but not hideously so ...

Given that it is sunny, but cold, it is a mixed bag ...

I like using the Streetcar because it goes directly to 23rd and no parking is required ... I have learned from other DUers here just how valuable the public transportation is here, and I am catching on ... I also have a monthly pass, and so Im already paid for ....

Ah ... So Cerridwen and Greyhound are a team ..... Well that is wonderful ! ... We look forward to meeting you both ....

24. Yeah, I figured it might be an issue. A little walking will be a nice
change.

Our next "exploration expedition" will be to explore via public transit. I imagine it will take a while to break the drive-everywhere-habit we've both developed living in places where the phrase public transit is an oxymoron; with an emphasis on moron. It's one of the things that attracted us to Portland; public transit that transits the public to places they need and want to go.

Well, time to unpack a couple more boxes and get ready to explore. Will see you soon.

19. Thanks and a question...
Can't make the PDX meet up this time, though would enjoy staying connected. Live close...just a little ways up the Columbia River Gorge.

Do y'all hang out in a "regional" DU group, or should I look for Portland posts here? Thanks and have a happy & peaceful New Year! :)

Cheers~

21. This group isnt really organized ....
It is just a matter of common geography that we meet as we do .... Its very informal ...

There are MANY Oregon DUers, and it would be great to get connected and stay connected in some way ... Perhaps having a statewide meetup would be feasable ? .... Perhaps ....

We have discussed camp outings and such, since Oregon and Washington have SUCH wonderful natural resources ... nothing planned as of yet .... But I REALLY look forward to such events ...

Let see where such ideas take us ? .... Life should be lived ...

35. Got sidetracked in an unexpected way.
Had to work today, no one to watch my daughter so I brought her with me. Every Mcmenemins Iv'e been to, to date, had a family area. This one aparently doesn't.

Showed up at 3:30, ascertained that the pub let in children, then figured out I was one block off in the wrong pub. New Old Lompoc doesn't allow minors. Rather dismayed that I didn't think this one thru. Sorry folks, next time.

Syncronaut Seven.
