Kids Save Horses Headed To The Slaughterhouse

Charlotte Fadipe
Reporting

(CBS13) DAVIS, Calif. They're in the final steps of a long road to freedom, “It’s all so amazing and they look so sacred coming out of the trailer,” said horse rescuer Brittany McCoy.

For the last week about a dozen kids have been fundraising to buy not one, not two, but six horses. Each of them is pregnant and was headed for the slaughterhouse back east.

“Once you see these horses you know each one has had a different story and that they've been through so much in their lives,” said McCoy.

The kids all volunteer with a non profit agency called The Grace Foundation, which is dedicated to rescuing horses. When they heard these six were due slaughtered for 55 cents a pound, saving them became their new years resolution.

snip...
In just one week they raised almost $40,000 dollars, enough to give each horse a one way ticket from the slaughter house to the safety.

15. Me too.
But then I always think of the ones we can't save.

I'm a sucker for orphaned animals, people bring them to me from all over.

But I can't save all of them and it never seems to be enough.

At least I know there's another generation coming along that may be able to do more than mine.

4. What a great story...
these kids have done something amazing-they cared about animals enough to get involved and raise money so that these horses would not meet a tragic end. I love to see stories like this. I wish there were more of them.

6. So their lives were valued at 55 cents a pound? Great kids

man that was a double Kleenex story. Of course, they wouldn't tell us who they were rescued from, but that's ok.

I'll have to put the Grace Foundation on my list if I ever win the Lottery (HAHA).

7. Excellent... I think I'll look them up and buy me a horse....metapohrically speaking of course....
If they are still trying to raise money to save a few more... that is.

11. Eliminate U.S. horse slaughter
Wasn't there a bill pending to eliminate the slaughter of horses in the U.S? Maybe a democratic congress can finally get this done.

16. I believe it was held up in the Senate
after passing in the House. Hopefully they will tackle the issue again this new year but they will have to be pushed to do so.

These kids are wonderful for what they have done!

:woohoo:
