I just got done watching the Boys of St Vincent
For the uniniated it is about a pedeophilia and abuse scandal at a Catholic orphanage. It is amazingly graphic. I don't favor the death penalty but these people should be put under the jail. Instead they got transfered to abuse God alone knows how many kids. In addition the kids continued to get abused by the replacements. A church that covered this up is immoral.

If you haven't seen it, and have a strong stomach, I recommend it. But be forewarned it isn't fun, it isn't pleasent, you won't sleep well.

1. The pedophilia scandal was enough to turn off any
good opinion of the Catholic Church hierarchy (not the membership) I ever had. I don't see the godliness of encouraging people to breed themselves into poverty, either.

2. Henry Czerny played the pedophile priest - he was disturbing to watch
He's a veteran character actor - never headlined any Hollywood film that I know of, but he's a serious workhorse. Keep an eye on him.

4. He was astounding
His last scene was positively breathtaking. The combination of brutality and love he showed toward the boy in that scene was totally believeable. Creepy but believable.

11. An NFB classic
As a Canadian I remember it well, as it was about to go to air, there were attempts to censor it, and the Supreme Court stepped in to strike down the ban on airing the program.

12. It honestly could have used some editting
Some of the scenes were just ghastly. Not as ghastly as what the boys endured, admittedly but ghastly.

6. Where was the orphanage?
We have a St Vincent former orphanage in my town and I hope it's not the same place.

7. Was there any resolution?
I assume since there is a movie made about this scandal--that these priests were held accountable.
Is that the case?

What about the children? How are they doing?

I hope this tragic, horrific true story ends with some hope for the children.

10. there was a movie made called the Boys of St Vincent
after 15 years and that presumedly would cover that. This movie ends with no good resolution. It is honestly about as disturbing as it gets. The perpretrators get transferred, the boys stay in the orphanage and one of the new priests molests a boy on the first night there. The movie ends with the two main victims, on behalf of the school giving a gift to a government minister who gives a check to the school.

13. I just looked up this movie...
Edited on Sat Dec-30-06 11:24 PM by TwoSparkles
...and just like you said, there is a "Part 2".

SPOILERS************** (Also--could be disturbing to some)

In "Part 2", it sounds like there really isn't any resolution. The priest
is put on trial, but "Part 2" doesn't show the verdict, because the trial
wasn't finished at the time the movie was made. One of the victims grows
up to be a drug addict and ends up killing himself. This inspires the
main victim to testify against the priest. The priest is shown confessing
his sins to another priest. He's tormented at the end of the movie.

It doesn't sound like there is clear resolution. If anything, this movie
sounds like an accurate account of the devastation of pedophilia. There
is always a huge, untold wake of emotional wreckage--and most predators are
never discovered, nor stopped.

Ninety percent of children who are sexually abused, never tell anyone. The
stories we hear about--as sad as it is--have the best outcomes. This is one
story that does not have closure and a just outcome. Maybe this movie, and
it's disturbing tone--can help society to understand the deep well of pain
and trauma that these predators cause their victims and society. Thousands
and thousands of children have stories--just as God-awful as this one--but
we will never hear about them.

It sounds like the movie had a very profound effect on you. Take gentle
care of yourself...this stuff is very difficult to see.

14. It was much worse than I thought it would be from its description
It was just dreadful. I had wondered if there was resolution, sadly apparently not. It is hard to come forward in a timely manner especially when you get screwed over immediately after having done so. Sadness all the way around.

16. It is sad...
Did you just watch this tonight?

If so, I hope you can take a bubble bath or call a friend--to help process this.

The write-ups on this movie match what you are saying--that it is dreadful and disturbing. It
sounds like the movie very accurately portrayed what pedophiles are truly like--and that is
very unsettling. We'd all like to think that pedophiles are ugly, toothless old men who
hang out in the parks wearing trench coats. Most pedophiles look like the guy next door.

That's scary in itself.

At least this movie is trying to shed light. It's speaking to people about a very harsh
reality--and really--that can only help the victims.

Your very-sympathetic feelings toward the victims--is very healing to victims of crimes
like these.

17. Just a hot shower
and church in the morning. I sometimes lose it with these types of films, so to speak. This was much more graphic than an American film would have been.

18. You're a very compassionate...
...and caring person.

I hope you find some peace tonight--and I'm sure you'll find
some in church tomorrow.

Thanks for being so empathetic toward victims of crimes
like this. Your understanding--and willingness to comprehend
how these victims feel--is very courageous.

I can't think of much more evil than raping a child. Your praise is kind indeed though.

15. it is one of the most
truly disturbing movies I've ever watched.

I had nightmares. None of which would compare to the hellishness that these boys went through.
