Has anybody seen Super Size Me?
I've been watching it tonight on MSNBC and it is pretty scary. Never seen it before. Thank god I don't care for junk food.

1. Didn't see it.. but my friend called me while she was watching it..
Sad something about some of the mega icecream tycoons either dying early, or having triple by-passes..

Wow.. .. sad.

17. Yeah, the Baskin-Robbins guys.
I think Baskin and Robbins died young and Ben (of Ben and Jerry's) had a quadruple bypass at 49 or some such.

2. I saw it.
It was a little bit over dramatized. Nevertheless, it's an important message. Some people think that fast food is "normal" food. Well, it's not.

I cannot remember the last time I had any of that crap.

It had to be at least 30 years ago.

4. Yes, and since I don't eat that stuff, I found it pretty funny
You have to admit that when the first meal came back up and out the car window, it was pretty funny. Poor guy. He should have taken the hint and avoided an inflamed liver and an alienated girlfriend.

I hate seeing people buying that stuff for their kids, but it's their choice.

Lol, now she's got him on a detox diet.

Great documentary. I hope he keeps things coming.

Only one gripe, I pretty much don't touch fast food, but still am overweight. I think he neglected to put in genetics as the reason some folks are heavyset.

re the Mickey D connection, but I think even more the point was the just utter unhealthiness of the food there.

6. I have it on, too. The part about school lunches was true, but
they are improving somewhat. Our district removed the soda and candy machines at least, and now offer fresh fruit and veggies at lunch. There is still way too much fat and salt in the food, though. And the breakfasts are loaded with sugar. We now have a student "wellness" policy that was state-mandated, but I really don't see much improvement in the cafeteria. And don't forget, P.E. is one of the subjects that is continually under-funded due to the emphasis on high-stakes testing.

19. The town I live in has a lot of heavy people
(especially the natives, lots of transplants here). There are soda machines in the high school I know for sure. Most of their parents eat in a not-so-healthy way and no doubt that influences it.

...and I was very moved by it.

I remember being appalled at how much damage was done to his body--during the month
that the ate only McDonald's. He actually had liver damage, among other things.

It was also eye opening to see how the food affected his moods and his mental health.
The sugar (and other crap) in the food became like a drug in his body. He was constantly
depressed and moody--until he had McDonald's again, then he would peak and then bottom
out--until he at McDonald's again. It really was like watching a junkie spiral into
hell.

I was also stunned at the large amounts of sugar in every McDonald's menu item. The
salad dressings are saturated with sugar, and they even manage to infuse sugar into
the burgers/sandwiches and fries.

His physical and emotional transformation throughout the film--was really startling.

It was dramatic, and I think everyone should see it.

Haven't seen the flick yet, but the book was an eye opener for me. Labor abuses, lack of governmental oversight, horrible treatment of livestock.

Did you know the Government cannot demand a re-call of food? The manufacturers have to agree to it?

14. Did they show the testing of various fast food items?
Edited on Sat Dec-30-06 11:01 PM by blackops
It was at the end of the movie on the DVD. It may have been bonus footage. Anyway, they placed various fast food items (and "real" hamburgers and fries), under glass to see how long they would last. The "real" items lasted a couple days, but the fast food items (especially the fries) lasted forever!

21. I rarely eat fast food
And I don't drink soda pop. But, my roommate puts away two liters of diet coke a day, BUT, it used to be sugar filled mountain dew . This is because his doc who is also my doc got him to change. And he isn't as big as he was. But I still wonder what two liters of soda worth of aspartame everyday would do to a body.

I can't eat splenda it messed me up really bad,I had a red ring rash around my neck and I got depression so bad my past shrink was trying to convince me to go for electro shock therapy. I can tolerate very small amounts of aspartame if I take alot of of it I will get a headache and feel dizzy.

I often wonder what kinds of addictive crazy shit corporations do with our food. The flavorings and chemicals it is frightening. Now cloned meat has been approved as if it is safe. Thing that bothers me about cloned meat is they can clone it from dead cows. The ranchers can clone a live calf from a cow that is already dead. This kind of genetic tinkering for cost cutting schemes, bothers me.Factory farms already raise calves on blood from the slaughterhouses.Food manufacturers they don't care who dies from their products or who gets addicted. They are nothing but pushers poisoners and liars and they have destroyed our world.

24. Yes!
Good movie and very informative. I really liked the part about the fries that, I think, were also found in King Tut's tomb. They lived for centuries. Funny part is that when I cleaned out my car after hauling around three grandchildren, I too found fries in several hidden crevices. And guess what? They looked just as fresh and new as the day they came out of the deep fryer! Wouldn't be surprised a bit if the four year old wasn't munching on one he found lodged between his car seat tray six months later!

Nobody makes anybody eat at McDonalds. There's always Subway and the Salads at McDonalds. Nobody makes individuals eat the crap that's on the value menu. We need to keep personal choice in mind. Same thing with tobacco and alcohol. While banning tobacco use in public places is one thing, personal use is one's own matter and issue. If somebody wants to get strokes and heart disease then that's their business and their body.

with ranch dressing has more calories than a Big Mac. Or so the movie said. That amazed me...and the regular size yogurt thingie, if you get the granola on it, has more calories than the fudge sundae.

31. I think most people with half-a-brain though know....
that salad dressing isn't exactly the best thing for you. I always eat my salads plain. People eat as they choose - and I commend McDonalds for recently adding all that health info to their products. I enjoyed a quarter-pounder with cheese the other day and I probably suffered around the midsection for it but it was my personal choice. If somebody else eats garbage then it's their own problem. Subway's always there with that "Jarod menu" and if they want to stay fit and/or lose weight - it's a great way to keep the calories down. Or of course just leave the dressing off the salad....

at the outset of the film they do these man on the street interviews re the lawsuit and this one guy says, "Hell, just don't go in there." True words.

I think our society has lost touch with personal responsibility. That said, I was shocked how bad the fat content was...

33. Sorry if I came off as argumentive....
I just find it sad that so many libs and Dems are so oblivious to the concept of personal responsibility. We like to do all this stuff to help tobacco users but in the end only they can throw out the cig or throw the can of snuff away. It's the same thing here. You had a great point. We've created so many excuses for people in this country that people are deferring their basic responsibilities as human beings to society and of course you know that always leads to more bullshit....

35. Yeah, we're on a slippery slope here
and I for one don't want the government telling me what to do all the time, or what NOT to do.

However, the part about the kids eating just fries for lunch or Little Debbie Rolls...I don't have kids, so it doesn't affect me directly, but perhaps they should not sell that crap in schools. That was certainly a good point in the show.

At any rate I enjoyed the movie; the guy is pretty funny.

37. Oh I know all about that...
They had 4 lines at my high school, submarine sandwiches/hoagies, hamburger/cheeseburger, pizza, and the "hot lunch." Hot lunch usually meant something different and then the other 3 lines served ONLY greasy french fries with with pizza/burgie/hoagie. It was so gross. I got hot lunch every day or brought my own lunch. And they wonder why so many kids are insanely overweight -- they teach it to them in the schools!
