Laugh it up, monkey-face... |
|
I notice that a lot of people are chuckling over Bush's comments regarding human/animal hybrids in the SOTU last night. Now while I agree it seems a little bit strange, I must remind you that Canada passed a law banning such research a couple of years ago.
It IS on the horizon, whether we want to look it or not. Sure, for the moment it sounds like science fiction. But, then again, a LOT of things we consider routine now was sci-fi twenty years ago. It shouldn't be discounted. Bush may be an idiot, but this isn't completely insane.
Whether we, or Canada, ban this sort of research, China or N. Korea will be happy to take it up. It's no joke.

7. wow. I hardly ever get a chance to see what the morons (oh pardon me, I |
|
forgot the freepers can't spell, morans) write before they get booted. And I have to say, I'm disappointed. I somehow expected more. At least more volume. Why spend the time registering for an account so you can peck out 2 sentences that in no way approximate anything hurtful, intelligent, or even witty?
You really don't have a life, do you?

5. I have a PhD friend who has bred human DNA into cows |
|
She has actually cloned cows, and the first successful clone was named after her! I'd post the link to the story about it on BBC, but not without her permission. I'm not sure she wants to be the subject of a DU thread. But anyway, this really isn't all that far-fetched. The cow with human DNA was hoped to produce vaccines for humans which don't rely on albumen or certain special processes that are way over my head.
Oddly enough, she's on to cloning mice now, looking for breast cancer cures. The point is, while she hasn't created a cow who can walk erect and read the evening news, the idea of human-animal hybrids ain't that wacky.

9. They've been doing similar stuff in bacteria for years |
|
I believe that's how human insulin is mass-produced: insterting the genes to produce human insulin in bacteria, and the bacteria create it as a byproduct.
