Gunman opens fire in gay bar, New Bedford, Massachusetts

A man wielding an axe and a gun entered a gay bar in New Bedford, Massachusetts shortly after midnight and asked if there were any more gay bars in the area. He then opened fire. Several people have been shot, no word on their condition yet. WBZ News Boston.

6. UPDATE: Attacker at large, only 18 years old

Police in New Bedford are looking for an 18-year-old suspect following a violent overnight attack in a gay bar.

Police say Jason Robida of New Bedford is considered armed and dangerous.

Three people were shot in the incident, which police are investigating as a hate crime.

A bartender at Puzzles Lounge says a man dressed in black with a hooded sweatshirt walked in around midnight and asked if it was a gay bar. After being told that it was, the bartender said the man showed an I-D and ordered a couple of drinks.

The bartender said the man then went to the rear of the bar and attacked some patrons with a hatchet.

11. In some places you only have to be 18 to enter a bar

For example, Champaign IL allows 18 year olds in bars, but they are not allowed to drink. What's funny is that the local police wait along the main drag of the students' part of town and issue a lot of underage drinking fines when the bars close

They searched his house and found nazi paraphernalia. Hit two people playing pool with a hatchet. When they fought back, he pulled out a gun and shot the two people with a gun, then shot someone leaving the bathroom. Three victims are in serious condition.

Neighbor says he would only go out at night. warning that he is extremely violent and may have been injured in the attack.

New Bedford now has two things to be proud of ... Big Dan's and Puzzles. Just shows that there are nuts everywhere, even in MA.

15. Alas, my home town, site of

Big Dan's Tavern infamy, makes the news again. How very sad. Checked the hometown paper on line and called my parents who still live there. The authorities had not identified the victims as of about 45 minutes ago, but 2 were evac'd to Boston, one taken to the local hospital (god help THAT poor soul) Suspect apparently used a fake ID showing him to be 23 years old.

20. You know, he could be anyone in that community.

So many of the kids in this area look just like him. I saw a kid that looked a great deal like him last night at a store not far from that area. He was cursing a blue streak in the parking lot, he and his friend were calling each other the 'n' word and acting all gansta'. They were meeting someone in the lot that was suppose to score some "weed" (their word) for them. they were ticked off that they thought their supplier had the stuff with them but pretended that they had to go a few towns over to get it instead.

Then, the young man that looks like that kid, opened the door to the store for me and was very polite. He even said "you're welcome" after I thanked him for opening the door.

I was going into the store to do some work, so I tried not to appear that I was paying much attention to their behavior in the lot.

Wish I had paid more attention at the time. It could have been this kid. :shrug:
