Feingold on DKOS: "Bush has Pre-1776 mentality" GREAT!
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/2/2/10581/84829

"Pre-1776 mentality" - PURE GOLD!

I've seen some strange things in my life, but I cannot describe the feeling I had, sitting on the House floor during Tuesday's State of the Union speech, listening to the President assert that his executive power is, basically, absolute, and watching several members of Congress stand up and cheer him on. It was surreal and disrespectful to our system of government and to the oath that as elected officials we have all sworn to uphold. Cheering? Clapping? Applause? All for violating the law?

The President and his administration continue their spin and media blitz in attempts to defend the fact that they broke, and continue to break, the law. Their weak and shifting justifications for doing so continue. The latest from the President seems to be that basically the FISA law, passed in 1978, is out of date. His decision that he can apparently disregard "old law" fits the pattern with the President and his administration. He's decided to disregard a statute (FISA) and the Constitution (the 4th Amendment) by continuing to wiretap Americans' phone calls and emails without the required warrant, while at the same time claiming powers of the presidency that do not exist. (Perhaps he feels the Constitution is too "old," as well.) This administration reacts to any questions about spying on American citizens by saying that those of us who stand up for our rights and freedoms are somehow living in a "pre-September 11th, 2001 world."

In fact, the President is living in a pre-1776 world.

Before even the Magna Carta when there was one supreme divine king who didn't share power with anybody and was accountable to no one.

3. Pretty reminiscent of post-magna carta actually.
The power limited to the king went to the nobles. No provisions for us common folk.

If he runs for Pres in '08, I'd love to know what votes as Senator the Repub slime machine will be able to use against him.

What is a good resource to research past votes?

Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 12:56 PM by jane_pippin
ran for his seat the last time.

It didn't work. He got more votes than Kerry did here, and Kerry won the state.

If you want a good overview of Russ, check out the Feb. issue of Vogue magazine for an article about him. It's a fluff piece, but it does do a good job of capturing Russ, the guy, and I thought it nicely summarized why we Wisconsin folks like him so much and vote for him despite the "handicaps" of being divorced and Jewish. Unfortunately I don't have a link to the article yet. (My search for it just brought the fashion stuff from the magazine.)

edit: His website from senate.gov should have his voting record up to look at, too.

36. I like Feingold, but comparing the votes Kerry got to his votes
is not apples to apples.

Feingold was the incumbent and well known to the state. From accounts I read from afar (so I can be very off base) he had a pretty weak opponent. Kerry was challanging an incumbent President, he had to get people to know who he was and had a pretty hostile media environment.

44. That's a good point. I hadn't thought of it that way.
His opponent was laughably weak--the RNC ended up pulling out some money from his campaign, IIRC. Still, I remember wincing quite a bit during the Republican primaries and at the beginning of the campaign over the attacks on Russ. I was scared they just might work.

Still, as a candidate Russ has been able to pull votes from Republicans. Some others on the board have mentioned seeing Bush signs on lawns with Feingold signs right next to them, and I remember seeing that too. So that's nice to think about. But you're right, it might not be fair to compare the two results without thinking of the reasons you mentioned.

46. Thanks, I really hesitated before posting that because
being from NJ, they COULD have been equally tough races. In NJ, there was no Senatorial race in 2004. What I did see were many signs for the Republican house candidate without a Bush sign, which in past elections wouldn't happen much.

50. Senator Boxer Won Considerably More Votes in California than Kerry
but then, Kerry's campaign offices in the state were too few and woefully understaffed - only one headquarters in Santa Monica! (no staffed office in San Francisco!) so that might have been part of the problem, among others.

No staffed office in San Francisco! Wow, it's amazing he did as well as he did. But there had to be a SanFrancisco Democrats. (We had a Morris County Democrats and were calling on all the races, but mostly Kerry.)

Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 04:30 PM by izzybeans
This time in relation "Terrorist Surveillance Program" as he calls it.

My retort was that kind goerge as in a 1775 mindset. And I think its a mantra to stick to.

I wasn't saying this was a duplicate. I was just commenting on the fact that I said the same thing a week ago.

39. The truth does sound surreal these days.
I was just describing this play going on at my school to someone, Far Away, as a "surreal post-apocalyptic" play, when in fact its world of insane people and routine violence is a truth we're inching towards here in the real world.

martial status! or his being Jewish so long as he doesn't do the bidding of AIPAC or AEI I'm fine - and I don't have that sense about him at all.

My sense of Feingold is that his loyalty to the People and the Constitution of the United States of America. This administration have people in the NSA with dual Citizenship - I'm not comfortable with that.

I am also very impressed with his campaign finance ethics. very impressed.

Barbaric (well, in Europe at least). Prone to wars of conquest. Religious wars. The divine right of kings. Bush would fit right in there.
