Q from minimal TV viewer: Where is the Rose Parade??
Its New Year's Day, and I turn on the TV for one of the few events I
like - the Rose Parade (without idiots, on HGTV)...

and its not on.

I look around, and I don't see a Bowl game of any kind, just NFL.

What happened? Did they cancel New Year's because its Sunday.

Sorry to be so clueless about what passes for culture in this wacked
society? But can someone tell me what's going on?

I feel like an alien in my own country.

2. Old Law in Pasadena
Edited on Sun Jan-01-06 11:35 AM by Juniperx
They can't run the parade on a Sunday... it will spook all the horses tied up outside the churches.

Really! It's true!

Edited to say... the parade is running tomorrow. If Jan 1 falls on a Sunday, they stick to the old law and run it the day after. The Rose Bowl game will be played on Wednesday (I think).

14. Correct.
The parade also blocks people from going to church. Pasadena has traditionally been a conservative bastion.

3. Bowls And Parades Tomorrow
I think that they're doing most of the big parades and bowls tomorrow, because Sunday is sacred to the NFL.

4. Rescheduled to Monday, but storms may be a problem:
Storms could put damper on Rose Parade for first time in decades
DAISY NGUYEN
Associated Press

PASADENA, Calif. - It hasn't rained on the Rose Parade since 1955 but the half-century run of luck was in jeopardy as the first of back-to-back storms arrived in Southern California on Saturday.

The Tournament of Roses is traditionally held on New Year's morning, but a never-on-Sunday rule forced the 117th parade to be pushed back to Monday - and right into the crosshairs of the second tempest, which was forecast to be considerably stronger and packing powerful winds.

"The timing on this second storm remains somewhat uncertain," the National Weather Service acknowledged Saturday morning, but went on to predict "the most likely time of the heaviest rain and strongest winds occurring Sunday night into Monday morning."

5. Thanks to all...now I don't feel like an idiot - Happy New Year
The NFL owns Sunday - makes sense in this twisted society.

6. It has nothing to do with NFL!
Why are the Tournament celebrations sometimes held on January 2?

The Tournament of Roses is a tradition full of traditions, one of which is our “Never on Sunday” policy. In 1893, officials decided to move the parade to Monday, January 2 to avoid frightening horses tethered outside local churches and thus interfering with worship services. As a result of this reverent gesture, speculation abounds as to the rare instances of rainfall on New Year’s Day (only nine times in Rose Parade history), prompting some to ask the Tournament about its special pact with a “friend upstairs.” Also as a result of this tradition, other collegiate bowl organizations have instituted similar procedures. The upcoming Rose Parade is on Monday, January 2, 2006 in observance of the Never on Sunday tradition.

9. Well, you tried !!
This is "latitude of acceptance" in action -- when you present an argument (not on Sunday to prevent spooking horses) that is outside people's range of acceptance, they can't even hear you - even with repeated posts, with links...

13. Scary, isn't it?
The only reason I know about this law is because I've lived in SoCal all my life and the issue has come up a few times. Still, I'm a show me kind of person and I thought "most" people here on DU were the same. Being skeptical in these times is a good thing, imho. It is rather shocking, to say the least, that people here would go for the "logical" yet incorrect answer to something that is easily explained.

If we can't get it together on something simple like this, we are doomed!

15. Well it is pretty clear that many, many DUers don't read all of the posts
in a thread before responding. I don't think it is scary, I think it is informative and still funny --> :)
