Critical security flaws fixed in Firefox update
http://www.computerworld.com/securitytopics/security/story/0,10801,108309,00.html

The new release's eight security fixes have been cumulatively been rated as "highly critical" by Copenhagen-based security firm Secunia, because some of them could theoretically be exploited to take over an unpatched PC.

Mozilla updates Firefox 1.5.01 for OS X

http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/02/02/firefox.seamonkey

Mozilla has released Firefox 1.5.0.1, a stability and security update for the web browser. New in Firefox is improved support for Mac OS X, International Domain Name support for Iceland (.is), fixes for several memory leaks, and several security enhancements. The new Firefox is a free download requiring Mac OS X 10.2 or greater. Earlier this week, Mozilla released SeaMonkey 1.0, a final release of the software that bundles a web browser and email client, as well as a WYSIWYG web page composer and an IRC chat client.

1. And they don't give you the choice...it just updates.
Don't get me wrong...that's not a problem for me.

I didn't have to go to a website to DL an update, it did it automatically when I opened Firefox. No "do you want to update now" screen...nothing. It just did it.

2. I was asked though I knew what to expect. Go to Advanced/Update
tab and you can change the update settings. Automatic is default.

8. The StumbleUpon extension
link: https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&category=Popular&numpg=10&id=138

StumbleUpon lets you "channelsurf" the best-reviewed sites on the web. It is a collaborative surfing tool for browsing, reviewing and sharing great sites with like-minded people. This helps you find interesting webpages you wouldn't think to search for.

I *highly* recommend it. It's one of the very best Firefox extensions.

12. Yep, it's pretty cool
You tell the program what some of your interests are (they have a very wide selection). It then randomly picks websites based on your interests.

14. Before you use anything like StumbleUpon...
... read their privacy statement. If that's ok with you, then go ahead.

Personally, I don't trust them -- in the same way that I don't trust TinyURL. They exist to make money, not to be altruistic. I specifically do not trust gushing testimonials on websites as they could very well be placed by marketing people to promote such websites. Yes, such people exist.

Then again, you shouldn't trust a critic like me based solely on my claims. Do some research. Make informed choices. Trust no-one.

16. This is one rare case where the marketing matches the delivery.
SU has mounds of users and millions and millions of "stumbles".

I really have to impress upon people that SU shouldn't be judged unless you actually give them a spin first. I personally guarantee that most people will be pleasantly surprised.

I find links serendipitously using SU all the time. Note that it's not my only tool for discovering sites, but it definitely competes with Google and Wikipedia.

Also, given that it's a social bookmarking site, it's kind of obvious that you have to be public in terms of what sites you visit and approve of (or disapprove of). I look at joining SU as equivalent to becoming a public figure in terms of some of your websurfing activities-- that is, you are agreeing to open up your habits to the world.

But I think that's cool. I want the world to know what I like and dislike. And I want to contribute to a database that determines the best sites by use of a kind of democratic approach.

However, if you want uber-privacy in your surfing (and I suppose there's nothing wrong with that), by all means, stay away from social bookmarking sites.

9. I don't know what I'd do without some of the Firefox extensions...
I use. Their library of extensions is so large and impressive that it makes the idea of even considering using any other browser preposterous.

11. A few of my favorite extensions
Great extensions I have installed:

1) - Adblock (self explanatory)
2) - Answers. Alt+left-click on any word in your browser window to get a definition.
3) - FoxyTunes. Puts the controls for a multitude of media players directly below your browser window.
4) - 1-ClickWeather. Current conditions and forecasts for your area from weather.com.

4. Gotcha...I'm new to Firefox.
Just recently broke away from the evil IE when it repeatedly locked up my computer. Things are MUCH better with Firefox.
