The Nazi Comparison trope is hereby invalidated.
Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 03:51 AM by JackintheGreen
You know the one: whoever invokes a Nazi comparison first loses the argument.

I just heard Rumsfeld say, "Hugo Chavez was elected, just like Adolf Hitler...and it worries me."

This was not a quote, mind you. It was Rummy's own sweet voice. You see, he's worried by governments like Chavez's that, though elected, are rife with corruption and graft.

Mind. Boggling.

1. It's the pot calling the kettle black.
Chavez doesn't have a perfect record when one queries Human Rights Watch or Amnesty International, but no democratically elected administration does as far as I know, and I would say Chavez' record is a bit better than the US government's own human rights record. Like it or not, Chavez survived the recall attempt and won 59 percent of the vote. There were a few problems, but the Carter Center and other international monitors certified the election as clean.

27. If anything, Chavez is closer to Lenin\Stalin\Mao on the spectrum
than he is to Hitler, not that Rumsferatu could be expected to understand or appreciate such a nuance.

13. HAHAHAHA!!!!!! Getting defensive? You attacked and insulted me!

"Get Your Mind Right!" - My mind is just fine.

"Look fool," - OOPS! It's against DU rules to insult and call people names.

"Your childishness at confusing the NSA with NorthCom is noted. You don't have much to worry about from the fascist police forces, because you are basically clueless... blah blah blah" - Thanks, now I will sleep better knowing that I, a "childish fool," will be ignored by Big Brother. YOU certainly won't be ignored by the NSA! :eyes:

"I hope that you can see is that what you have done, childishly, is to succumb to fear-mongering that fascist asses like Oil Slick Dick and sidekick Dubya try to cram down your throat." - You, a brand new member, have no idea who I am.

"You are repeating their lies." - what the HELL are you talking about?

"You are trying to tell me to be afraid." - I was joking, but also I am telling you to be SCARED SHITLESS!

"FUCK YOU!" - Big OOPS!

"I'm not buying your childish cowering little boy." - I am sure you would be scared shitless to say this crap to my face. Don't believe me? Ask a hundred DUers about me and you will learn that, at this point, I HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE!

"And my name is Raymond Duray. And I AM a patriot!" - Woohoo! Good for you! :patriot:

6. Good Christ, Raymond Duray!
It's 3 in the goddamn morning, I just got off work, and Heaven forfend! I heard something on the radio (do you remember those, or are they too in the dustbin of history along with typewriters, 12" vinyl, and courtesy apparently). You see, Raymond Duray, it proves somewhat difficult to hyperlink to the radio, as sound is a non-perduring communication channel. What is remarkable about sound though, as St. Augustine (another man who put his name of his work) pointed out, is that for it to bear any meaning whatsoever it must endure within memory at least long enough for the last phoneme to catch up with the first. I just so happened to remember Rumsfeld's words and hought them remarkable enough to note for my fellows, including you, Raymond Duray.

Now, sure I could have used this time better to find a link to the BBC and provide you with satisfaction, but this was admittedly more fun. Cheers to you, Raymond Duray.

8. Um Hitler wasn't elected. He was, like bush, appointed. Rummy is a wee
bit short on facts.

The Esteemed Statesman Hugo Chavez is indeed a rightfully elected leader.

bush and his pal hitler were not elected.

14. As we have all come to learn...
It's okay to be elected - as long as you're "elected" by the RIGHT people. This is why many states (now oncluding OH and PA) are passing those new unconstitutional) "voter ID required" laws) - so that the RIGHT people do the electin'.

Chavez was elected by riff-raff - anybody could vote. That's just not RIGHT.

23. Too true. Before Hindenburg appointed Hitler
the vote for the Nazi Party in that election actually declined from the vote the Nazi Party received in the election preceding that. (Don't remember dates, exactly.)

Von Papen thought he would be able to control Hitler; the exact opposite occurred.

29. I don't remember exactly either, but for those who want
an education about those times should read "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William Shirer. It's the most comprehensive work on the history of Nazi Germany out there that I know about that has most of the era documented in one place.

Reading it will give anyone chills as they start noticing the startling parallels between the Reich and our own BushCo.

30. Also, I highly recommend "The Nazi Seizure of Power"
by Dietrich Bracher. (Originally in German as Die Nationalsozialismus Machtergreifung, translated into English.)

The Nazi Party never received a majority in any free election prior to 1933. The election that brought Hitler to power saw the Nazi Party receive a plurality of about 32%, down from the 33% in the election preceding that one. Hitler came to power, in part, because the traditional German right wing (of Von Papen and Hindenburg) thought he could be controlled.

26. This was the basis for Leo Strauss's teachings-
That you can't rely on unruly concepts like democracy, because you might not get the results you want, so you, as the ruling elite, have to control it, by lying and deception if necessary. Strauss was reacting to Hitler. Rummy and the neocons are Straussians.
