Sen. Roberts: " you really don't have any civil liberties if you're dead"

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0602030145feb03,1,4285056.story

<snip>

At the close of the hearing, Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), the committee's chairman, angered Democrats by suggesting they were more focused on threats to civil liberties by intelligence agencies than threats from terrorist networks. "I would only point out that you really don't have any civil liberties if you're dead," he said.

The leading Democrat on the panel, Sen. John Rockefeller of West Virginia, responded testily that he was "strongly for the goals" of disrupting domestic terrorist plots. "But I want it to be done under the law," he said. "And so should you. That's what keeps our country together."

2. Republicans finally reach for the lowest expectation possible.
"Well, it could be worse. You could be dead. Stop complaining about lack of liberties, lack of jobs, environmental disaster, and your coming torture and imprisonoment."

5. Didn't someone say "Give me liberty or give me death"?
This "unknown" person could have been a patriot, right?

9. Uh, I'm not THAT clueless
It was a rhetorical question.

:)

I am glad that others know Mr. Henry, though. Let's spread the word...

7. You can't obstruct investigations when you're dead, either.
So I suppose we should all be bowing in thanks to our Dear Leader, since we're NOT dead yet.

8. Pat Roberts is like a junior high school principal from 1943.
I feel sorry for the Kansans who know better and voted different but got Pat. They're doing their part for democracy and Pat clearly is not.

What a goddamned fascist.

10. Pat, ask people who have lived their lives without civil liberties,
and a lot of them will tell you there's not much difference between that and death.

If Roberts is scared for himself, he needs to be replaced tout de suite (you can do it, Kansas!). If he's trying to scare the rest of us, he should be ashamed of himself. A leader ruling by fear is dangerous; a leader ruling in fear isn't a leader at all.

13. smoking kills 400,000 each year - where is the outrage? of course
that makes 2 million tobacco dead since 9/11, but the tobacco lobby bribes politicians, and the 'terrorists' do not, at least that we KNOW of.

18. sounds like what my SoBapt girls' group leader said about evolution
'Well, Darwin may have been descended from a monkey, but I'm certainly not.'

Since we all had pretty much come to the conclusion that evolution didn't contradict 'In the beginning God', we just looked at each other and shrugged.

You just can't have a conversation with people like that.
