Just think - somewhere, in a parallel universe...
Going with the parallel universe theory in which anything that can happen has happened in one of the infinite parallel universes...

- Gore won in '00 (and became president)
- Kerry won in '04 (ditto)
- Bush is currently being tried for war crimes before a UN tribunal
- Canada has invaded the United States
- So has every other country
- we have a working national health care plan
- businesses in Europe and Asia are outsourcing their jobs to the United States
- Brittany Spears and Jessica Simpson get booted out during the first round of American Idol, never to be seen in the public limelight again
- liberal talk radio is the rage, and conservatives struggle to gain a foothold
- every one of you has won the lottery
- every one of you is a freeper (that's the dark universe from Star Trek)
- Michael Moore's movies are blockbusters, while George Lucas is still trying to get someone to distribute Star Wars
- Arabs and Jews live in perfect harmony. Meanwhile, the world is still trying to figure out how to deal with the raging Buddhist/Taoist conflict in the Far East.

Feel free to add your own.

1. You should come to mine
Straight people are begging for equal rights, as the tyrannical gay majority has banned them from marraige.

They are only used when gay people need their sperm/eggs to reproduce.

4. Is that the same universe in which Brokeback Mountain...
features a touching love story about a rugged cowboy and his love for an attractive young woman? Where mobs of angry gay protesters demand this movie be shut down? Is this the universe where John Wayne portrays a gay cowboy in all of his movies, and he always gets his man?

Maybe we should banish Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson to this universe! Oh, how fitting would that be?

George Bush is doing an office job and never even tried to run in the first place and Poppy Bush is in jail and the truth about JFK's murder is out.

15. LOL - it would be as if Oswald had a son trying to run for president today
If Pappy's role in the JFK assassination had become public knowledge and he were rotting in jail (or executed), all of his son's reputations would have been mud by association. Who's going to elect the son of the man who played a role in JFK's death to public office?

3. if Gore had won 00, Kerry would probably not candidate 04
and Bush wouldn't be tried for war crimes (he couldn't commit any), nobody had invaded the USA, but probably would be fighting terrorism with the US if 9/11 happened and Gore didn't prevent it (anyway the prevention had caused an intensified struggle). You can dream about the outsourcing but it would mean that the US would be selling CHEAP labour... Liberal radio would be liberal TV, Michael Moores movies would be AGAINST the sitting power. Arabs and Jews would still fight....

even parallell universes have an intern logic

7. Those are separate universes
According to theory, everything that happens in this world has an opposite counterpart in another universe. Hence the Nazis win WWII in many universes.

In one universe, Gore is still president after having won his 2nd term. In another universe, Bush still stole the '00 election, but Kerry triumphed in '04. And strange as it might seem, in some universes Michael Moore is the sitting power, and some other person is making movies against him.

18. yep but the chain of events must be logic
in the Gore universe, since Gore is President, Bush cannot commit war crimes (unless he joins BlackWater which with his AWOL record is not likely etc..). In this universe Bush lose the elections and starts drinking again. And that doesn't send him to the Hague. Maybe his Father can be indicted for war crimes during Gulf War, but that puts even Clinton in trouble. Kerry might in theory run against Gore, but why win ? Because Gore fucked up 9/11 ?

If you change ONE element, the rest changes.

6. You guys ought to write alternate history stories/novellas/novels,
only thing is, a perfect world makes for boring reading.

Your characters have to have SOME problems/difficulties/struggles.

9. Actually I do enjoy reading 'alternate history' novels
Harry Turtledove has written some very good ones. He has a series of books that explores a history in which the Confederacy won the Civil War, and winds up fighting a series of wars with the Union. I believe the Confederacy wins the first two, but eventually loses in WWI when they side with Germany. This sets up a fascist takeover for the South (while a Socialist becomes president in the North), and the Confederacy allies itself with Nazi Germany for WWII.

Very, very intriguing set of books. It uses actual historical figures, and places them where he thinks they would have played a role. Upton Sinclair plays a pretty prominent role, I believe. If you're into that sort of thing, I'd check it out.

12. Is that the one where Joe Kennedy become president in the North for
WWII and the Slaves in the south form a sort of Marxist Underground?

14. I believe so
Although I haven't read them all yet, I've only read the first two and familiar with the rest. I know the former slaves (I think he has the Confederacy bowing to pressure and abolishing slavery soon after the Civil War, although civil rights are still nonexistant) do form a Marxist movement. I'm not too sure about the Joe Kennedy as president of the North in WWII. The Marxist movement takes place around the time of WWI.
