Which fictional character do you think best embodies the GOP spirit?
I think Cartman from South Park and Eddy from Ed Edd & Eddy are perfect examples of young animated Republicans. What do you think?

47. Gordon Gekko
he told us everything we need to know in 1987:

The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bullshit. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own.

It's not a question of enough, pal. It's a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn't lost or made, it's simply transferred from one perception to another.

The point is ladies and gentlemen that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of it's forms - greed for life, for money, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of mankind and greed - you mark my words - will not only save Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.

59. George F. Babbitt ...
Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 02:52 PM by FlemingsGhost
From the back cover summary of Sinclair Lewis', "Babbitt":

"With his portrait of George F. Babbitt, the conniving, prosperous real-estate man from Zenith, Sinclair Lewis created one of the ugliest, but most conniving, figures in American fiction--the total conformist. Babbitt's demons are power in his community and the self-esteem he can only recieve from others. In his attempts to reconcile these aspirations, he is loyal to whoever serves his need of the moment: time and time again he proves an opportunist in business practice and domestic affairs. Outwardly he conforms with "zip and zowie," is a "big booster" before the public eye; inwardly he converges day by day upon the utter emptiness of his soul--too filled with rationalizations and sentimentality to sense his own corruption. "Babbitt" gives consummate expression to the glibness and irresponsibility of the hardened, professional social climber."

63. The Scorpion in the "Frog and Scorpion" story
Where the scorpion begs the frog to carry him across the stream. "You'll sting me and I will die," says the frog. "If I did that, we would both die, because I can't swim," the scorpion reassures himself. So they set off, the frog reluctantly. Halfway across, the scorpion stings the frog. As the frog goes into his death throes, he says, "Now we will both die. How could you do this?"

"I couldn't help it," says the scorpion. "It's my nature."

That partially explains their willingness to allow the rich to pay no taxes, their opposition to any environmental reform, and a lot more. Partially. The other part is...they're assholes.

72. 'Roger' -- from LORD OF THE FLIES.
In Goldman's novel, 'Roger' is the stone-thrower, the remorseless and violent tall boy who visits terror and intimidation onto the others. He is emotionally inarticulate and seems to exist in a sort of fear/violence matrix. A very nasty piece of work.

So naturally the Bush administration came to mind in comparison.

This is a GREAT post.

79. I'm undoubtedly dating myself, but...
Bush reminds me of Quick Draw McGraw, because he seems to want to do all of the "thinnin'" without the capacity to do it, as in...

"I'll do the thinnin' around here, and don't your fergit, it!"

At certain times, as in Bush's march to New Orleans, he turns into El Kabong...

And the rest of the GOP is emulated by Baba Looie, His faithful side kick, who knows he's full of crap, but is never able to tell him that.

Just a thought.

80. Bush is an evil Roscoe P Coltrane and Cheaney is an evil
Boss Hogg.
