Iraq War Veteran Would 'Do It Again in a Heartbeat'
Friday, February 03, 2006

POWELL, Wyo. — "I'd do it again in a heartbeat."

Despite being wounded three times in three different conflicts and battling pain from shrapnel he still carries in his back, veteran Gary Peabody would do it all over again.

"Its my country," he said.

The wounds that ended Peabody's military service came early in the Iraq invasion in a brutal battle near Baghdad. He was one of only seven in his unit who survived the battle; last Thanksgiving, one of the other survivors committed suicide.

Now at home on disability, Peabody has, himself, battled depression and bad dreams as well as pain, but said he is now recovering "with the help of Jesus."

2. He's earned the right to say that
far far more than any of the Bush chickenhawks. I don't agree with him, but I sincerely hope he is able to recover from his wounds, physical and emotional, and go on with his life in peace.

5. Agreed
Unlike certain RWers, who feel that if they disagree with a war vet, it's okay to tarnish that vet's military service as well.

8. Agreed
Perhaps if he thinks IRAQ is so worth fighting for, he should become an Iraqi citizen and work for their true independence.

Its the only way to get through to the brainwashed.

Keep patting him on his head and shaking your heads in sorrow. I tend to believe honesty works better.

17. This is exactly why the wingnuts don't understand what patriotism is.
I was listening to Michael Medved a week or so ago, and he was going on (again) about how the Left says they support the troops, but you can't say you support the troops if you don't support their mission in Iraq.

And of course this article illustrates one reason why this is preposterous.

Our soldiers will do -- and learn to love -- ANY mission we send them on, no matter how dangerous, futile, or quixotic. That's part of what it means to be a soldier. Doing your best, no matter how inept your superiors, how bad the planning, how inadequate your resources, how misguided the mission. You give it your all anyway. You bond with those in the thick of it with you, no matter what the mission is.

To say that a soldier's pride in his accomplishments justifies any mission is to show a complete lack of understanding of what it means to be a soldier, and what our obligation is to them.

To say that you can only "support the troops" by supporting whatever mission they've been given is an abrogation of your responsibility for their welfare, and of your responsibility to the world for our military's wise use.

But this is all obvious. And people like Medved know it. They only say these sorts of things to stir up their audience, to get higher ratings, and to convince themselves.

20. I' m Sure Faux News
Will go back in 20 years for the story of how he can't get medical care because of the cuts in VA benefits, that his kids can't get a loan to go to college, or that his Social Security is gone.

I'm sure they'll go back in 20 years and update us on how his wounds destroyed his marriage, alienated him from his children, caused him to find his best friend at the bottom of a bottle of Gin, or the end of a hypodermic needle. I'm sure they'll update us when he's wheeling his wheelchair around cars at a busy intersection with a sign the says "Disabled Vet, Please Help"

Please ask him then Faux News, if he'd "do it all over again".

You hope this guy will make it, but if not, I'm sure Faux will be on the story :sarcasm:

Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 02:33 PM by FlemingsGhost
You are an insignificant pawn, Gary. Cannon fodder for the fascist powerbrokers. And now, a mouthpiece lapdog for their propaganda machine.

This isn't your country, you fool. This is your nightmare. Our nightmare, in fact, and you are part of the problem.

Jesus has his work cut out for him, on this one.

the help of Jesus. Do you think Faux would have spotlighted this guy if he said "with the help of Allah" or "with the help of Buddha."
