Pelosi creates panel to tackle energy bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) said on Thursday that she is creating a special committee to prepare a package of legislation to address the nation's energy needs and global warming.

"I have asked the chairs of the relevant committees to hold hearings and pass legislation so that by the Fourth of July we can have a package of legislation to truly declare our energy independence," Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters at a news conference.

Pelosi creates global warming committee

WASHINGTON - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) created a special committee Thursday in an effort to jump-start long-delayed government efforts to deal with global warming.

Pelosi, D-Calif., said the committee would hold hearings and recommend legislation on how to reduce greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide generated by fossil fuels, that most scientists blame for a gradual warming of the earth's climate.

The committee will be led by Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., who shares Pelosi's goals, said a Democratic leadership aide, speaking on condition of anonymity because Pelosi had yet to announce her choice.

Actual bill-drafting duties will be left to committees that have a say in the matter. That could be several because global climate change could affect virtually everything.

Pelosi's move increases the likelihood that Democrats will propose far tougher constraints on greenhouse gas pollution than the Bush administration wants. She also has outflanked for now — and angered — a few Democrats who head important House committees.

3. Thanks!
As for Dingell, is there anything more annoying than a whiny 80 year-old Republigeez?

4. Dingell is just voting his district. He is NOT showing leadership here.
I'm from Michigan and have relatives and neighbors who used to work at various auto plants. They had difficult but well-compensated jobs and contributed a lot to their communities.

Dingell isn't doing his constituents or the auto industry any favors by allowing them to let the air out of their own tires and put sugar in their own gas tanks.

There's plenty of engineering and design talent around the auto companies that would be able to do something constructive with a high mileage, low emission mandate if the idiots at the top would wake up and smell the lack of exhaust fumes.

9. indeed -- it's like a Detroit politician in 1900, complaining that Ford
.... and his "newfangled automobile" would outcompete the carriagemakers and put Michiganders out of work. Human beings are not going to give up cars -- and the sooner the auto companies see how much money could be made with alternative propulsion systems, the sooner they will be able to benefit. Too bad the companies that ARE starting to jockey for position seem to be the Japanese ones!

I am hoping that there is some kind of internal company coup that overturns management at the Big Three, and puts more dynamic people in charge (like, for example, the ones who developed GM's electric car, but were undercut by their own bosses).

10. Great analogy!
The only folks who can really do anything are directors feeling heat from lots of major shareholders.

By the time that happens, it will probably be too late.
