I also think the musical accompaniment stands on its own. Great lyrics and that singer's voice somehow seems uniquely suited for that song.
The recurring line referring to Bush --"he has been here" -- is quietly chilling.

bpilgrim has provided links about the singer in his thread here:

117. James Blunt sold out 2 shows in NYC 10 minutes.
His Washington DC show sold out in less than 2 minutes.

He had the best selling record in Great Britain in 2005. It is now Gold in America.

You need to get it. He is becoming a phenomenon.

I previewed it on iTunes and fell in love with his voice. He's addictive. One of the reviews on iTunes commented that "his voice will haunt your soul" and that's is very accurate. You find you mind unable to let go of the songs and his voice haunts your mind. I highly recommend him!!

23. I do have a concern with the last text message...Outsource the war?
First this is a very powerful piece, and very appreciative of it.
I just have a concern about the very last part of it. Where it suggests the US "outsource the war" to Iraqis. It gives the impression that we should have the Iraqi people doing the killing (but does the US still remain the owners of the enterprise?). Just reminds me too much of the whole idea of "Iraqization of the war effort", like Nixon's idea of Vietnamization of that conflict (Let Vietnamese prevent a popular government, by all means, we just drop bombs from the sky). I doubt very much that this was the intention of the film creator, but that is my concern.

What the US needs to do, besides getting the hell out of the Middle East, is to support real self-determination. To end support for oppressive regimes (from Egypt to Israel, to Saudi Arabia. We will not be supporting oppression, military occupation).

I remember some of the pictures. I don't see how you could stand to sort through so many pictures to find the right ones.

Seeing these, I was confronted in an even more profound way than before with a most unpleasant fact: MY country did this, I am responsible.

What devastation, what inhumanity, what pain and hatred we are bequeathing our children and grandchildren.

(And I have colleagues and family members who think US has done exactly the right thing under the 'leadership of a divinely chosen, Godly man.')

110. Submit to Current TV!!!
http://www.current.tv/studio/create

Submitting to Current

Can anybody submit VC2?

Yes! (Okay, one caveat: We generally can't accept submissions from people under 18 years old.)

What kind of submissions are you interested in?

Check out the create & upload area to get a sense of that. There's room for just about any short non-fiction work. And don't assume you need to send in a perfect, finished piece, either; we're also looking for compelling raw footage.

We're not looking for fiction, unless it's satire. And we're definitely not looking for music videos made to commercial music. (STOP THE COLDPLAY.)

Also, you'll probably have better luck if you make something new and fresh for Current, as opposed to just digging out whatever old work you have lying around.

What length are you looking for?

Thirty seconds to five minutes. If it's longer and really good, that's okay, too.

For the most part, we get thank you's and support from the people who come by. However, we have the occasional 'sheeple' that come by and see my poster and shout "Go Bush!", as if they are ok with this. Sometimes I can see people averting their eyes, as if in shame, probably because they support the freakin' terrorist (Bush), so I walk to the edge of the street while they wait at the light, to make SURE that they get a good look. Thanks for sharing this. So sad...

61. "What About the Children?" they ask...
I haven't been emotional about the war since Binka's son got hurt. I keep burying it. This really got to me. This needs to be on tv. Bush needs to be in prison.

James Blunt - No Bravery Lyrics

There are children standing here,
Arms outstretched into the sky,
Tears drying on their face.
He has been here.
Brothers lie in shallow graves.
Fathers lost without a trace.
A nation blind to their disgrace,
Since he's been here.

And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

Houses burnt beyond repair.
The smell of death is in the air.
A woman weeping in despair says,
He has been here.
Tracer lighting up the sky.
It's another families' turn to die.
A child afraid to even cry out says,
He has been here.

And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

There are children standing here,
Arms outstretched into the sky,
But no one asks the question why,
He has been here.
Old men kneel and accept their fate.
Wives and daughters cut and raped.
A generation drenched in hate.
Yes, he has been here.

And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

But after last night, the way he was talking got to me so much that I downloaded the show and have listened to it over again twice now.

As long as you're fighting for real democracy, & not the perverted brand foisted on America and the world by this wayward (and questionably "elected") administration -- your country is not responsible for this pain.

92. I appreciate what you're saying, PF
It's comforting to think of it in those terms. But I'm just too good at imagining the dispirited soldiers who feel like they've been thrown to the wolves and abandoned by US voters, and the Iraqis who will for the rest of their lives be haunted by the injustice they're suffering at America's hands.

It isn't my country or yours that's doing this...yet for all intents and purposes, it is.

97. I've wrestled with this as well..
I can't describe my disgust at what is being done in my name.

I've always felt lucky and proud to be an American. I still do feel this way, but for different reasons now.

It's more important now than ever to reassert the true American spirit of freedom -- as established by the document that all politicians swear to uphold and defend against all enemies -- foreign or domestic.

Of course it is immeasurably saddening that the PNAC/Bu$h (useful puppet) admin has taken us to here; but the rest is up to "We the people."

Let your mourning period be swift. You're needed on the front lines.

It does kind of bother me, however, that one talented artist would use a public forum such as this to attempt to call another talented artist out with no solid facts to back up any of the claims made. It is not a far stretch to think that both of them, being the great artists that they are, heard the song, and thought with lyrics and music like that, they could put pictures to it to tell a story.

On edit: I do not know much about Ava, her work is new to me, and I have checked it out on the HuffPo and it is wonderful, and as far as bpilgrim is concerned, I check out his work on a regular basis on http://news.globalfreepress.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=lastupby&uid=1 and there is nothing that would make me think that this piece didn't come straight from his heart.

153. thank you
both of you. :toast:

once the archives are turned back on i will look for my first post about my flash, hopefully it was on the same day i started - (01/22) in mike malloys thread, i think - and this will clear this whole thing up quickly since hers was first made public on 01/23 at her site - that i had never been to before until a DU'er pointed it out to me on 02/01.

either way i wish her all the best, she is obviously very talented and the more of us working to spread the word, the better.

peace

182. This issue was first addressed privately.....
with no resolution. So that should relieve some of your bother. Once this thread appeared, it was made public. I advised her to take a stand for what she felt was right. It was not easy for her to come in here as a newbie and state her case. I'm proud of her.

She never expected this would happen. She and bpilgrim both know how they created their animations. Since both are comfortable with their efforts, all we can do is stick by our friends.

BTW, bpilgrims commitment to our cause has never been questioned. Artistic originality is the only issue involved here. In the grand scheme of things it's a minor blip in time, unless you're an artist. Only then does it matter.

184. no it wasn't
i tried to make contact but i was ignored, even told that my emails were getting through but NO answer accept suddenly this public attempt to slander me.

now, after it being brought out in public only you pm me here and after repeated attempts to explain my work, prove my time frame and explain how it is not hard to understand how 2 people could come up with the same theme using the same song independently, not only have i still haven't even received an apology more untruths appear.

stop, please.

189. my position on this matter.......
This will be my last post on this thread. In the spirit of full disclosure, this is why I got involved:

http://peacetakescourage.com/forum/privmsg.php?folder=savebox&mode=read&p=881

As you can see she has no PM privileges here yet. You've asked both Ava and me for apologies. We instead are willing to offer our evidence about your timeline.

I am willing to do this privately or publicly on another thread if you prefer. You make the call.

And for samhsarah, I also am a musician/songwriter/*artist* and I did not do this without consideration. This has been unpleasant for everyone. I'm thinking Ava has learned some valuable lessons because of this controversy.

Hopefully, bpilgrim and Ava can reach some conclusion that is acceptable to both and we can all go on to bigger and better things.

and leave this to bpilgrim and Ava. You might want to consider doing the same. As I said before, I think twice now, this should have been between the two of them in the first place. But since you are an artist as well I guess you already knew that. Good luck in all you do.

Peace.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=218736

that, with the screen-shoot i sent to ava of my original file with it's creation date (01/22), hopefully, will finally settle this matter.

we are ALL trying to get the word out, lets not eat our own.

keep up the good fight.

I'm not trying to take sides here. As you stated, only each individual artist knows what inspired them to do each particular piece of work. I am proud of Ava, as well for the amazing work she has created and for taking such initiative, using her art to speak out politically is a brave thing to do, especially as such a young age.

As an artist myself, I can tell you that what was implied here is a very hurtful accusation to make and if you intend to do so publically, you should be prepared to back up your claims. All of this is just my opinion, and I am neither of the artists' involved so other than stating my opinion, there is really nothing else for me to say.

I wish both artists well, they are both very talented, and as far as getting the message of peace out, you are right, we are ALL on the same side here.

The entire thing is very powerful. It's absolutely great. But why does it have to say "Outsource the War"? That's like saying let the war continue, let's just not be responsible for it anymore. It should say "end the war" not "outsource the war". Because after watching that powerful video, I can't agree that we should let that kind of stuff continue just not with our own soldiers.

This is the most heart wrenching anti-war, anti-Bush presentation that I have ever seen. I stumbled across it Saturday morning when I logged onto the Huffington Post. I was addicted. I cried the first several times I watched/listened to it. I was undone by the whole thing, but the most painful moment for me was the second picture of that little girl with blood on her hands and the little boy standing off to the right. He just sort of had this lost look on his face. So little, so young, not understanding, and terrifed since "He has been there."

We are united in the fact that we share a sense of ownership for the pain and suffering this administration does because they do it in our name. That is because of our shared values.

This presentation forces me to focus on that. I wish those Americans who are so quick to dismiss those of us who oppose this immoral and illegal war would try to look past their simple bias and try to understand why we feel so strongly. But they can't, and so they won't.

206. Just came upon this work today (thanks to a site I'm not allowed to name).
Edited on Sat Feb-11-06 08:36 PM by newswolf56
It is without a doubt the most powerfully evocative work of its kind I have ever encountered -- more apt than Ginsberg's now-legendary "Howl" or his definitively anti-war "Wichita Vortex Sutra," more disturbing than Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit." It is a genuine breakthrough in its blend of words and pictures; it transcends all the limitations too often imposed by the characteristically American division of politics from art. For me personally it achieves a heartfelt intensity of political passion I had hitherto found only in the plainspoken and deservedly legendary songs of Celtic rebellion or the Russian Revolution, a breathtaking poignancy perhaps only equaled by the Shostakovitch/Yevtushenko version of "Babi Yar" -- the highest praise I can manage to babble, still stunned as I am after hearing and seeing it twice in succession. Thank you so much for posting this.

221. The "He" in the original song is supposed to be vague.
Generally, "He" = the angel of death, but Bush fits. It's also been suggested that the He is Milosevic, who was responsible for the death and destruction that the original song was written about.

I don't think Blunt has ever really answered the question though.

222. Re: No Bravery
Thanks Xithras,
I Emailed the James Blunt website, and I've just received a reply. They said that when he wrote the song, he meant 'He" to be "evil and death."
I suppose 2 words could sum that up - George Bush!!!!

209. I did not join the Marine Corps for this. He is an abomination.
He and his cabal... his Satanic Coven... :banghead:

I have no words.

I pray for James Blunt that he survive the consequences of this piece of Truth...

... and I thank all my Gods that he wrote it and shared it with an undeserving world.

It will be sent to my Dirty Dozen momentarily.

214. We are those children...
Don't misunderstand me, we Americans are all complicit in this mess. All of us are appalled, yet fervently hope that we can hold on to our rich lifestyle and keep all our goodies. Whether voting has or has not been rigged to get these guys in office is immaterial because our whole society has produced these Enron-type of people, and they are us. So we do need to feel that we are partly to blame.

On the other hand, if you're like me when you watch this video and look into the eyes of those lost little children you will see yourself. We used to be naive. We used to believe we could do no wrong. We used to believe we were the greatest country, the greatest form of government. Just like those children believed that their parents would protect them and be there for them, we have believed that our country would do those things for us. And just as those children inevitably will be hardened and even more hardened, we too are hardened because of the loss of our naivete, our innocence. That is why it is so spooky to look at those kids, because down deep inside we know that they are us, and we are them.

Saying, "Sorry" obviously won't undo the damage. Paying the survivors huge sums of money wouldn't even be enough. There is NOTHING we can do, nothing that will make it good, nothing. The only thing we can try to do is to fess up to our own complicity, our disgrace.

218. I've Posted It
I've posted a link on my blog, secure america and captain cynic. It is a very powerful piece - depicting the travesty without condemning the soldier but putting the squarely where it belongs. Excellent piece, I wish everyone could see it.

220. This from the "save the fetus", Leave no child behind crowd
Our govt is a hypocritical killing machine and that claims a "culture of life" while exhibiting only a culture of death.
We hear save the fetus from the Christian fascists, leave no child behind (alive I guess) from their lips as well.
The "Christian" leader of the US forgot the meaning of "suffer the children unto me".
This film is very sad indeed when we are constantly told "support the troops" when our own govt has made monsters out of them.
Sad indeed.

225. Very difficult (or impossible) questions to think about
Here are questions I've asked others before, and I've never received good answers, because there are no good answers.

How old do you let your children get before showing them videos or pictures like 'No Bravery'? What about the torture videos? Do we let them get indoctrinated by their schools where their teachers aren't allowed to express a pro-peace viewpoint, or by the right wing controlled media's crusade against peace? Even when going to Wal-Mart or the local toy store there is a preponderance of war toys and games, which may give the impression that war is fun. Should we let our kids have fun playing at war, until they are old enough to see video that would very likely be rated 'R' or 'NC-17'?
Sadly, but obviously, we must at some point go from telling them stories of Santa Claus to telling them the truth about the world. We cannot let them get to enlistment age before we start telling them and showing them what they are in for.

Why is Peace a dirty word? Why are (peaceful) peace activists smeared, denegrated, arrested? What is so aggregious in loving your neighbor, or at least wanting to follow very simple rules of civilized people like 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'? How do we combine the concepts of bringing peace through use of the sword, with 'live by the sword, die by the sword'?

If people were genuinely 'pro-life' wouldn't they be against capital punishment, against war, against torture of foreign nationals, and against the mistreatment of animals in factory farms, and against the proliferation of firearms? Shouldn't so-called 'pro-life' people be for rescuing those in danger from catastrophes like Katrina or from a Tsunami? Shouldn't 'pro-life' also encompass feeding the poor, and supporting programs to lift up and encourage those who need it so desperately?

One more difficult question. How do we say we are against slavery, when we take our companies to other countries so that we can pay a worker pennies a day and deny him the normal and reasonable treatment and working conditions that he should expect from his employer? Why do we still employ illegal aliens in the fields, in packing plants, and in hotels? If we are truly against slavery like we say we are, how come the porn industry is at an all-time high? Why do we look the other way when we know darn well these people are being used and many times abused?

Perhaps the Native Americans had it right when they said that us white men speak with forked tongue.

To wrap this up, unless we of the United States of America turn back from our greed and re-align our values, we are heading for destruction. We have become like a rich spoiled playboy son who is getting disinherited by his family because of his lifestyle. We will be 'cut off'.
