Are cartoons going to start a middle east war?
I just saw where the protests against the cartoons about the Prohet are spreading throughout the whole Islamic World.

Its going to be pretty sad if we are all done in by a cartoon.

But everyone knows just how sensitive Middle Eastern people are about their religion. Look at poor Rushdi. I don't know if he has ever been able to really come out of hiding.

3. No, but state-sponsored hysteria over them might
Saying, "But everyone knows just how sensitive Middle Eastern people are about their religion," is using an over-broad brush, dontcha think? For a different perspective, I recommend http://angryarab.blogspot.com. Try this post http://tinyurl.com/dbe9o

Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 05:44 PM by SoCalDem
why not a freaking cartoon..

Until the whole world gets some real education, and backs away from the Bible, Koran, Torah, whatever, persuasive zealots will always be able to whip up their devotees into a mindless revenge frenzy.. Bush does it..the mullahs do it... Sharon did it..bin Laden does/did it..

Religion will be the death of us all if we don't find tolerance.

I'll propose a new bumper sticker (again): Tolerance will not be tolerated.

There is room on this Earth for many views and no one should have the views of another shoved down their throats.

it would be amusing, however, to see them try.

this is red meat to distract the muslim populace as surely as super bowl week is a waste of everyone's fucking time.

8. This week it is cartoons that are pissing everybody off.........
next week it will be some other inane thing. Time for the people of this damn planet to get real. The whole damn planet is heading toward extinction if we don't start taking care of the important stuff. Let's pick one or two continents where the extremists and fundamentalist 'WHATEVERS' can live and leave the rest of the mostly sane people alone to live with some sort of peace.

they're all in the same hand-writing.

I'd be interested if any DUer can found them from another news source.

Photos 27 to 31 in this sequence:

and a couple with other numbers, I suppose. It's an organised
demonstration - there's no reason why one or two people can't
make several placards for people to carry.

24. Actually that's pretty easy to explain (and the English writing also)
Those signs were probably written by one person, or maybe a small group of people, then distributed to people in the crowd. Chances are many of those protesting have no idea what their signs even say.

Why English? Because they know that English is pretty much the universal language, that television crews will be beaming those pictures around the world.

30. Seems like an agent provocateur wrote the signs
and the people carrying them were too dumb to figure out they were being used.

I don't know what's worse - the RW bigots who stir up the muslims or the minority of muslims who rise to the bait and confirm all their talking points.

14. The Nazis liked their cartoons a lot too
http://depthome.sunysuffolk.edu/Library/HDHU/collection.asp

Magazine that was published in Germany in 1941-1942 shows a Jewish cartoon character consuming a Russian, American, and English characterization. Attempted to demonstrate that the increased hostilities occurring in Europe was due to the Jews who were essentially responsible for controlling allied policies. Nazi propaganda was designed to intimate that the Jews were responsible for WWII as well as the woes of the world that plagued humanity during this most difficult of times.

31. Good point:
Saudi Arabia is not about to invade Denmark.

If there is a war it will be a pre-emptive attack by American/European forces on a Middle-Eastern country (probably Iran).

mobs on the streets help to mould Western public opinion that muslims are a threat, softening them up for RW-sponsored pre-emptive attacks on muslim countries.

35. Most of the 'protest' pics were from Friday...
People had nothing better to do after Friday prayers... Besides, the weather was nice!

I am joking, but only slightly. While there is anger here, the media is fueling this issue if not complely manufacturing it.

36. Cartoons are not going to start a war
but men's stupidity, bigotry, and unwillingness to tolerate others' existence might. True on both sides of the veil. Christian intolerance, Moslem intolerance, white/black, gay/straight...tribalism on roids. And noone appears to be willing to do things another way, especially those in power. That is why it is important to get rid of the flotsam and jetsom that have risen to the top. They are the dregs of humanity...scum.
