After 25 years, I know from whence Cokie's affect came: |
|
Due to the fact that all the football started late this afternoon, I watched a rented copy of "The Big Sleep", with Bogart and Bacall.
Yep, you guessed it: Cokie must have studied films and decided that the emulation of Lauren Bacall (born: Betty Perskie) would serve her well. Both have high-cheekbone, open faces, throaty voices, narrowing eyes when 'thinking', and a certain standoffishness which worked better for Ms. Bacall, quite frankly. Unfortunately, Cokie has metamorphosed into a bored, predictable fixture, whose Monday morning epistles on NPR are patronizing and poorly conceived. It really is a tragedy, because she could have been a real voice for educated, humanistic reason.
As an aside, this film is one of the great film noir masterpieces with an incredibly complex plot, lots of non-gratuitous violence, sexy repartee, and great humor. If you haven't seen it, do.

Actually, the funniest political moment I recall is when Senator Hollings was on and Sammy was hounding him about buying imported clothes - a suit from Korea, I think, and Hollings asked Sam where he bought that wig! He said, "Sam if you want to personalize it, we can personalize it."
