OUTRAGED AT THE MEDIA: Third Deadliest Day, one of most Deadliest Weekends in Iraq
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 12:24 AM by berni_mccoy
...since the war started. TWENTY SEVEN U.S. SOLDIERS HAVE DIED THIS WEEKEND!

And what are the headlines?!?!

Superbowl, political scrambling for the presidency in 2008... CNN even headlining Hillary's Healthcare OFFENSIVE (they call Democratic initiatives OFFENSIVEs, not initiatives).

Not MSNBC, not Yahoo, not NY Times, Not CNN, Not EVEN GOOGLE... NOT ANY MAJOR MEDIA WEBSITE has headlined this tragedy that we face today.

ONLY the Washington Post has a story on their front page about FIVE MORE SOLDIERS BEING KILLED IN AN AMBUSH.

I guess while more people die, they are just too busy looking for the "good" news to report out of Iraq ( :sarcasm: ).

1. Weekend. They called a guy who died as the lead in something he wasn't in
You have Lock up on MSNBC and Betty Winn on CNN. it's shallow time!
I find it offensive that it is so trivialized but, I will wait to see tomorrow if they pick up on it. If not, then I'll be pissed.

3. It's a sin
This week I had more time than usual to watch the news because my husband was away. What a waste of time. You can't GET the news on the cable stations!! CNN, MSNBC (I don't bother with FAUX) -- "headlines" are given on the hour I guess, with mind-numbing filler in between. Even yesterday, with the downed chopper and other deaths of our soldiers, it was encapsulated and set apart from the rest of what they call news. You could die before you learned anything of value.

Thank god for BBC America and Democracy Now! And when those aren't on I visit LBN here on DU. Is it any wonder most Americans don't have a clue how bad things are??

4. Amy does such a good job of reporting real stories. LINK has
real news coverage. I can't watch cable news at all on any other channel. It's just too disgusting.

I donated to LINK again this time even though I'm going to have to tighten the tofu budget a little bit for a while. They really need to stay on the air. It's an incomparable resource.

8. Oh yes, I watch LINK too.
We're lucky to get both LINK and FSTV and contribute to them/specific programs when we can. Can't say enough good about Amy. She gives the news for 5-10 minutes at the top of the show -- unemotional, no bias, lots of facts, cites any disagreement. Like it should be.

I do enjoy watching Hardball lately, since Tweety has gone all ballistic on Bush**. And KO of course. But Saturday I got another taste of why it's good to mostly avoid these channels, when MSNBC's Contessa Brewers (?) was interviewing someone about Hillary's run and remarked, "She has the NYC money support, but what about upstate where they have real values?" That's a paraphrase except the bit about the upstate "real values"...she said it just like that.

I'm no huge fan of Hillary, but come on. Contessa's not running a show like Tweety and KO -- she's supposed to be ANCHORING THE NEWS. Injecting her own bias is irresponsible (although of course expected on these channels). I turned it off right there.

10. That's why I won't watch those channels.
It's a constant propaganda shower. And I don't see it changing until we do something about reinstating the Fairness Doctrine. If we can.

5. I heard about it three or four times today on the different Cable News
channels...

Maybe I just happened to surf on by the only time they mentioned the carnage...

But a lot of weekend programing is specials and taped news shows so the breaking news is only on during certain day parts...

6. I hear you. So do many here who, I suspect, are just too tired of this very
thing to even respond to the continued dissapointment that characterizes America's media.

7. I think Bush got a 'get out of media scrutiny free' card
when he took office and has been using it ever since.

11. You know, this is even more horrible than Viet Nam in a way.
Because we should all know better because of Viet Nam.

13. Far worse than Nam; to date, more US troops have been killed in Iraq
than the number killed in Nam during the same time period; it was only AFTER the escalation in Nam that the bodycount skyrocketed.

The repercusions from bush's war on Iraq is going to be so much worse than Nam in every possible way.

ONLY GEORGE W. bUSH could be this big a total fuck-up and do this big a total fuck-up.

14. You left out MOST IMPORTANT STORY
It was on CBS Morning News -- that people in the UK are very upset about what happened on the British version of the reality show, "Big Brother." Yup, that was their most important story this morning.
