Another HUGE scandal awaiting Bush/Cheney, this could
really hurt them.

Here is a topic on ex-EPA head Christie Todd Whitman falsely claiming that the air at Ground Zero after 9/11 was safe to breath:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x308902

This topic was brought up some time ago about how Halliburton subsidiary WR Grace had installed asbestos materials in the WTC buildings. DU had lengthy discussions on this. Whitman quit her post probably because she felt the "Price of Loyalty" was too high.

This scandal has the potential to expode in the Bush Adminstations face while he is under the gun for so many other scandals. Let's take the fight to the bastards!

This is a call for all who know about WR Grace etc. to post what you know up here and get this information to the relevant authorities. It is obvious that Whitman was muscled to sugar coat the air quality reports because of the potential for lawsuits against Halliburton. Sen. Paul Wellstone's mysterious death is also related to his fight to improve asbestos safety that Cheney has worked in opposition to.

If Cheney and Bush can be linked to this coverup, a coverup that has harmed untold thousands unneccessarily then their political situation can only get worse.

Unfortunately I have to use a library computer (an hour a day) so I won't be able to keep up with the thread.

Actually, this one is particularly easy to ignore and marginalize, since it's about air quality and involves the EPA.

Unless a Democratic majority takes over the House in 2006, this is just one more crime that will fall right down the memory hole.

Whitman has been out in the media lambasting Rovian tactics and calling for moderates to retake the Repug party. Rove may just let her hang out of spite, if he thinks it's worth the damage.

Funny the way things work -- one of the only prominent repukes calling for sanity cannot escape her past culpability. It may be a national lesson in the dangers of conformity for any who might be following the story.

Inhaling toxic dust from the World Trade Center disaster on 11 September 2001 has damaged some rescue workers’ lungs more than years of smoking, US scientists reveal. Using an unconventional chest scan for the circumstances, researchers were able to capture visual signs of the severe respiratory problems that doctors could not otherwise have diagnosed.

Hundreds of people have been tested and treated for respiratory problems - or “World Trade Center cough” - since New York City’s twin towers fell, most of them suffering from asthma-like breathing difficulties. Some people, however, maintained persistent but unidentifiable coughs that could not be picked up using standard chest computed tomography (CT) scans.

“These people had symptoms that just didn’t fit the typical pattern. They weren’t treated at first because there wasn’t any objective evidence of what was wrong,” says lead author David Mendelson at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, US.

So Mendelson’s team turned to a technique called end-expiratory CT. In a normal chest scan, patients are asked to take a deep breath and hold it. In end-expiratory scans, patients take in a deep breath and release it slowly. In a healthy individual, the entire chest should be seen on the scan as an even grey colour – the CT representation of moving air. ....

That company has a plant in SC---

This plane crash was not suspicious---it was sad as hell.

Here is a link:

Richard Lyons and Joe Spiak flew from Boston to Charlotte to make the flight, and Paul Stidham flew in from Baltimore. They all worked for W.R. Grace, a big chemical company, and were bound for a plant in Enoree, S.C., that mined vermiculite.

Each man woke up before 4 that morning to catch an early flight to Charlotte. It was worth it to them. No one wanted to be away from home long. They were family men, married, with five children between them.

If Cheney and Bush were found to have plotted the whole 9/11 thing themselves the only result would be people complaining about how shocked they were an then the government, legal system and media would forget about it.

They have tentacles around so much of constitution, laws and media of this country that no one is strong enough to wrench it from their grasp.

Sorry.

Anger builds over EPA’s 9/11 report

MSNBC | Sept. 11, 2003
By Francesca Lyman

However, a report by the EPA’s Office of the Inspector General released on Aug. 21 states, among other criticisms, that the White House reviewed and even changed EPA statements about public health risks to make them sound less alarming. The report charges that the White House Council on Environmental Quality influenced “the information EPA communicated to the public through its early press releases when it convinced EPA to add reassuring statements and delete cautionary ones.” The report cites “reopening Wall Street” and “national security” as reasons for the spin.

‘We were all lied to’
The EPA presented “an overriding message that there was no significant threat to human health” even though there was cause for caution, it concluded.

“When EPA made a September 18 announcement that the air was ‘safe’ to breathe, it did not have sufficient data and analyses to make such a blanket statement,” said the OIG, adding that the agency was missing data on other pollutants, such as particulates and chemicals like PCBs. In addition, 25 percent of dust samples contained asbestos, a potent carcinogen.

Yes, Horinko admits, the EPA did find asbestos in the dust samples. “But the vast majority of the samples we took did not contain it,” she says.<snip>

33. This is really very old news, which sadly was underreported by our news
media. It's only surfacing again because the judge refused to grant Christie Todd Whitman immunity from the lawsuit being filed by some NY residents and students.

I posted this here on D.U. yesterday, but I think it bears re-posting in this thread. Basically, the White House edited the EPA's report on the air quality in and around Ground Zero after 9/11. They basically convinced the EPA to delete the cautionary statements in the report, and add more re-assuring statements that there was no data or evidence to support!!!!

White House edited EPA's 9/11 reports

By JOHN HEILPRIN
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON -- At the White House's direction, the Environmental Protection Agency gave New Yorkers misleading assurances that there was no health risk from the debris-laden air after the World Trade Center collapse, according to an internal inquiry.

President Bush's senior environmental adviser yesterday defended the White House involvement, saying it was justified by national security.

The White House "convinced EPA to add reassuring statements and delete cautionary ones" by having the National Security Council control EPA communications after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, according to a report issued late Thursday by EPA Inspector General Nikki Tinsley.

"When EPA made a Sept. 18 announcement that the air was 'safe' to breathe, the agency did not have sufficient data and analyses to make the statement," the report says, adding that the EPA had yet to adequately monitor air quality for contaminants such as PCBs, soot and dioxin.

In all, the EPA issued five news releases within 10 days of the attacks and four more by the end of 2001 reassuring the public about air quality. But it wasn't until June 2002 that the EPA determined that air quality had returned to pre-Sept. 11 levels -- well after respiratory ailments and other problems began to surface in hundreds of workers cleaning dusty offices and apartments.

The day after the attacks, former EPA Deputy Administrator Linda Fisher's chief of staff e-mailed senior EPA officials to say that "all statements to the media should be cleared" first by the National Security Council, which is Bush's main forum for discussing national security and foreign policy matters with his senior aides and Cabinet, the inspector general's report says.

Approval from the NSC, the report says, was arranged through the White House Council on Environmental Quality, which "influenced, through the collaboration process, the information that EPA communicated to the public through its early press releases when it convinced EPA to add reassuring statements and delete cautionary ones."

For example, the inspector general found, the EPA was persuaded to omit guidance for cleaning indoor spaces and tips on potential health effects from airborne dust containing asbestos, lead, glass fibers and concrete.

James Connaughton, chairman of the environmental council, which coordinates federal environmental efforts, said the White House directed the EPA to add and delete information based on how it should be released publicly.

He said the EPA did "an incredible job" with the World Trade Center cleanup.

Andy Darrell, New York regional director of Environmental Defense, an advocacy group, said the report is indicative of a pattern of White House interference in EPA affairs.

"For EPA to do its job well, it needs to be allowed to make decisions based on the science and the facts," he said.

The EPA inspector general recommended the EPA adopt new procedures so its public statements on health risks and environmental quality are backed by data and analysis.

Other recommendations include developing better procedures for indoor air cleanups and asbestos handling in large-scale disasters.

Still Silence From 9-11 Stock Speculation Probe
Dave Eberhart, NewsMax
Monday, June 3, 2002
Within a month of 9-11, the SEC, acting in concert with the Department of Justice, distributed a target list of 38 stocks to securities firms around the world looking for information about who might have profited by at least apparent pre-knowledge of the aerial attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. To date there has not been a public word from any agency as to whether they have snagged anyone.
According to market analysts, the investment of choice by someone with pre-knowledge of the catastrophe would be a type of market speculation involving so-called "put” options. Simplified, a put is a bet that a particular stock will go down.

The two most obvious stocks for such speculation by anyone with "insider” dope on the attacks are American and United airlines, the two hapless carriers that had planes hijacked and used as aerial bombs.

Both carriers are on the SEC list, which includes among others: Continental, Northwest, Southwest, USAirways, Lockheed Martin, John Hancock, MetLife, General Motors, Raytheon, W.R. Grace, Lone Star Technologies, American Express, the Bank of New York, Bank One, Citigroup, Lehman Brothers, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley.

Those in the industry are speculating themselves – and the best bet so far is that the official silence by the investigating agencies is owing to a lack of much to report.

As FBI Director Robert Mueller has conceded, precious little -- if any -- paper trail concerning the hijackers themselves has been detected after eight months of investigation. It would be surprising, therefore, that an alternate paper trail of illicit profits in the market would be any less elusive.

49. The ground zero worker's families should protest Bush!
If they don't this story will stay buried. How come they're not getting out there?

52. It is mind boggling what they have gotten away with
all in the name of "fighting terra." The media, of course, won't do their job and deliver Bush the knockout. And the Democrats have been too afraid.

58. It's cumulative. The more the public hears the worse Bush's
political situation gets. Plamegate is not over by a long shot and could result in the Bush fascists being brought to trial. This scandal could go the same way.
