Quotes illustrate divide between two world views

Jon Lawhon dredged up some quotes that are indicative of the creationist-ID-theistic responses to evolution ("Scientists say different things in private," Letters, Jan. 27).The quote from D.M.S. Watson is from a 1929 paper, 24 years before we even knew about the structure of DNA. The Rensberger quote is by a bachelor's level-trained writer during a 1980 meeting. Both of these were very public comments, so I don't understand why this should be confused with private commentary. This is probably one of the reasons many are confused about the phrase "separation of church and state."

More importantly, this exchange underscores the difference between two world views: Naturalism, which allows doubt and debate while looking for consistent, reasonable answers to life; and Theism, which takes a dogmatic stance in favor of unverifiable, supernatural explanations. Theism can allow you to support leaders who have blatantly displayed corruption and ineptitude as long as they profess the same mythological beliefs as you.

Let's remember what Voltaire said: "Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities."

Nore added- the quotes referred to here are some standard ones dredged up by ID folks to make it seem like scoentists have a lot of doubts about Evolution. The actually letter is is their archives and I can't link directly to it.
