On Saturday, February 4 at 11:15 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forever Free: The Story of Emancipation and Reconstruction
Eric Foner & Joshua Brown

Eric Foner discusses the role African-Americans played during the time of Reconstruction, the era that immediately followed the Civil War. Joining Mr. Foner in the discussion is Joshua Brown, illustrations editor for their new book, "Forever Free: The Story of Emancipation and Reconstruction." The speakers open by pointing out that only 20% of today's graduating high school seniors could identify and correctly define the Reconstruction era. In "Forever Free", Mr. Foner emphasizes the centrality of the black experience to understanding the Reconstruction years, especially in the American South. He also discusses the changing politics of President Lincoln during this period. Mr. Brown shows slides and discusses the use of newspapers, tintypes, and portraits of the day to both assist and deter reform efforts of African-Americans and the abolitionist movement. The talk was hosted by The New York Historical Society in New York City.

Eric Foner is the author or editor of several books including "The Story of American Freedom" and "Tom Paine and Revolutionary America." Mr. Foner won the 1988 Bancroft Prize for American History for his book "Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877." He is currently a history professor at Columbia University in New York City. 38. About UUSC
With more than 40,000 members and supporters, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee is a nonsectarian organization that promotes human rights and social justice worldwide. We maintain partnerships in the United States, South and Southeast Asia, Central Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Our programs are based on Unitarian Universalist principles that affirm the worth, dignity and human rights of every person — but one need not be a Unitarian Universalist to join UUSC.

Through a potent combination of advocacy, education and partnerships with grassroots organizations, UUSC supports programs and policies that empower women, defend the rights of children and support the struggles of indigenous people and oppressed racial and ethnic groups. We also provide financial and technical support when disasters strike impoverished areas.

UUSC relies on the support of people just like you to make our programs work.

The Service Committee trains and organizes U.S. citizens to advocate for legislative policies which foster social justice. We also educate U.S. citizens about human rights issues and rally thousands of UUSC members who have joined our Human Rights Network into action each year. Members of the network receive action alerts on key UUSC public policy issues and are encouraged to contact their legislators to advocate for just laws.

UUSC staff members work with members of Congress, the executive branch, and other U.S. government and United Nations officials to press for U.S. domestic and foreign policies that respect, promote and protect human rights.

UUSC is guided by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948.

We are an associate member of the Unitarian Universalist Association, but receive no general financial support from the UUA.

19. Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate
On Sunday, February 5 at 6:00 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate -- The Essential Guide for Progressives
George Lakoff

George Lakoff, author of “Don’t Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate--The Essential Guide for Progressives”, speaks at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco about the elemental differences between conservatives and progressives. Mr. Lakoff traces the differences in political ideology between the parties to differences in the idealized family model. He states that conservatives follow a “strict father” model while progressives follow a “nurturing parent” model. Mr. Lakoff bases his findings on research he has conducted as a linguistics professor at the University of California, Berkeley. The author uses the differences in these two models to “re-frame” reactions to many current issues, such as Hurricane Katrina, Terri Schiavo, abortion, gay marriage, and the recent Supreme Court nominations.

40. Beinart eviscerates Barnes
He nails him on writing a suck-up book in which he interviewed no one who criticizes Bush, "I know what they think. I don't need to interview them." Barnes shifts in his seat and clears his throat constantly, trying to explain how, "well, it's a short book and we were on a short deadline…" there's absolutely nothing negative on Bush in this book.

The book also examines current government spending and critiques the Republican leadership that has brought the national debt to 7.5 trillion dollars.

The Cold War: A New History
John Lewis Gaddis

Review - Snip -
Such challengers got their way in the end, though. The Cold War resulted in the discrediting of dictatorships around the world and "the globalization of democracy," Gaddis writes. "Promoting democracy became the most visible way that the Americans and their Western European allies could differentiate themselves from their Marxist-Leninist rivals."

Because of these views, Gaddis has become a favorite historian of the George W. Bush administration, which, of course, is now seeking to promote democracy in the Middle East. A year ago, Gaddis was called to the White House to offer his ideas before Bush delivered his second inaugural, which gave ever-greater stress to the importance of democracy.

In his other writings, Gaddis has become a qualified supporter of the Bush administration's strategy in combating terrorism. While criticizing the administration's unilateralism in Bush's first term, he has given credit to the idea of preemptive or even preventive warfare, arguing that the Sept. 11 attacks showed that Washington required a new strategy for a new era. "That event revealed a category of threats so difficult to detect and yet so devastating if carried out that the United States had little choice but to use pre-emptive means to prevent their emergence," he wrote in Foreign Affairs a year ago.

And yet Gaddis's conclusions in his new book call into question other aspects of the current administration's thinking. Several of the administration's leading officials, starting with Vice President Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, started their careers and developed their ideas during the Cold War. They have emphasized, above all, the importance of American military power. But Gaddis draws the opposite lesson. "The Cold War may well be remembered, then, as the point at which military strength, a defining characteristic of 'power' itself for the past five centuries, ceased to be that," he argues. "The Soviet Union collapsed, after all, with its military forces, even its nuclear capabilities, fully intact." Those are words worth keeping in mind as America, the surviving superpower, deals with the world in the aftermath of the Cold War. Without ideals, the missiles won't matter.

She Would Not Be Moved: How We Tell the Story of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott
Herbert Kohl

In "She Would Not Be Moved," Herbert Kohl argues that the traditional way children have been taught the Rosa Parks story is misleading. The author explains that Rosa Parks' decision not to give up her seat on an Alabama bus was part of a well thought out demonstration, not strictly a personal decision. Herbert Kohl urges teachers to take a closer look at textbooks written for children in order to accurately portray her role and the roles of others in the Civil Rights Movement. This event was hosted by the Teachers & Writers Collaborative in New York City.

Herbert Kohl founded and was the first director of the Teachers and Writers Collaborative in New York City and established the PEN West Center in San Francisco, California. He is the author of "I Won't Learn From You," and "36 Children."

Liars! Cheaters! Evildoers!: Demonizations and the End of Civil Debate in American Politics
Tom De Luca

Tom De Luca asserts that American politics have been demonized. In "Liars! Cheaters! Evildoers!," the book he co-authored with John Buell, he argues that the civil debate on policy has been replaced by attacks on the personal character of politicians. This event was hosted by Demos in New York City.

Tom De Luca is Associate Professor of Political Science at Fordham University in New York. He is the 2006 Fulbright Distinguished Thomas Jefferson Chair in American Social Studies at the University of Amsterdam and the author of "The Two Faces of Apathy."
