Why can't Congress repeal the war resolution ?
<snip>
Sounds like the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, doesn't it? Johnson used that resolution to justify the escalation of the war in Vietnam and Mr. Bush used the 2001 resolution to authorize the invasion of Iraq. There were dubious attacks in the Tonkin Gulf and there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. There is another problem with the 2001 resolution. If it authorizes what the president says it does, it violates the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

2. Because
politic ans are too afraid to lose their positions to remove the Resolution. That is why it is time to vote out all the Congressmen who do not agree with removing the troops within 3-6 months.

"But," guy from Pennsylvania will respond, "my congressman is on the House Ways and Means Committee!"

And Woman from Ohio will counter, "And my Congressman just got us that huge roadways bill."

And so people never vote out incumbents and the system gets more and more corrupt and then breaks down.

3. It's true. I have put up with Olympia Snowe more for her seniority
than any other reason. I hope we can get a progressive in her seat one day.

8. Yeah, I don't understand you Maineiacs
Olympia Snowe is incredibly popular. She Collins and Chafee are a blight. I'd love to see them all replaced with dems.

9. Maine has a lot of conservatives, believe it or not. I think, too, we
try to strike a certain balance. Our Sens are repubs but our Reps our Dems. Not sure if this is a conscious choice or just a fluke rather than a true voting pattern. Or, it's just that Collins and Snowe are entrenched?? I dunno.

4. The 1,000,000 dollar question: Will the courts buy the argument?
Ultimately, they are the arbiters, and if they're pro-business, don't expect a victory.

5. Democrats gave it to him right after 9/11. Now that Republicans are in
power, they will not do anything about it. They love their party and their jobs more than they love their country.

6. Oh, I agree, but who was in power
when Johnson lost his resolution? If it were dems, proof they loved their country more than their party. If it were repubs, maybe we need to remind them of that?

Politics is silly when unpopular pork is the problem, but it should be damn serious when we send troops in harms way ! So far, this war based on lies has killed more Iraqi people than 9-11.

7. Because the REPUKES control ALL branches of government, &
don't want to, in fact, are almost all CHICKENHAWK war mongers, while our Democrats are all COWARDS who fear "not looking strong" on defense matters, or some other such bullshit excuse.

13. There are two different war resolutions
one from 2001 that said Bush can invade anyone he thinks had a hand in 9/11.

The other from 2002 said Bush could invade Iraq if he had nothing better to do with his time.

The 2001 resolution is the he claims gave him authority to wiretap without warrants, even though Daschle told him it didn't in 2001.
