It's unfair and inaccurate to compare Bush and Nixon |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 07:22 PM by Armstead
Richard Nixon got caught and insisted "I am not a crook" and tried to fight that percerption by denying that he had broken any laws.
GW got caught and said "I broke a law that I decided was inconvenient. What ya going to do about it chumps? Ha,ha,ha."
The comparison is unfair to Nixon.

1. Nixon did a lot of good things |
|
EPA, OSHA, Endangered Species Act, ending the draft, relations with China, affirmative action programs.
It was just those whole Vietnam and Watergate things, but those were, uh, kind of big things.

Nixon could actually talk and walk at the same time. Nixon only bugged the Democratic headquarters during an elecion. * has easdropped in thousands of Americans for 5 years. We lost no cities or buildings under Nixon.

15. I see a partial rehab of Nixon coming |
|
I used to HATE him, but now recognize his "middle way" to advance foreign relations ala China, the EPA and "urban renewal' projects which got lost in his paranoia resulting in Watergate and trying to find an inextricably way out of Nam.
I think he would find Dubya abhorrent.
I NEVER thought I could hate anyone more than Dubya - but Nixon looks good right about now.

His paranoia about "executive privilege" primarily about 'Nam obliterated his positive aspects.
If not for 'Nam and his reliance on Kissinger/McNamara etal - his domestic and other foreign policies would place him among "moderate progressives".
A mighty big IF, I agree.
But it pales in comparison with the Demander in Thief.

22. I understand but Nixon was the architect of all this |
|
In many ways he was the architect of what's happening now, including wiretaps, remember the swiftboating of Kerry, he even hired the same guy. Bush just expanded on his ideas; so many of the forces that can into play back then including executive privilege are still in effect.

Nixon was intelligent; Bush is not. I think Bush sees himself as an FDR of sorts. Packing the Court, and changing the relationship between the public and government. An anti-FDR, if you will. One who's trying to use 9/11 much the way FDR used Pearl Harbor. In reality, I think Bush is closer to LBJ, albeit a socially conservative LBJ. Both brought the dirtiness of Texas politics to government. Bush seems to be politically wed to Cheney, ex-Halliburton CEO. LBJ was married to Lady Bird, a Halliburton heir. Both presidents ascribed to the theory of long-term limited warfare, much to the delight of the defense contractors.

Err... on second thought, that "opening up China" part might not have been such a hot idea.
