i just saw "the god that wasn't there"
a documentary about the historical and mythological underpinnings of christianity.
it's available here http://www.thegodmovie.com/ , but we just rented it via netflix.

the only thing we found disappointing was that it was only an hour long ... we wanted more!
fortunately, the dvd also has more full interviews with various interesting people (of which the feature movie of course has clips).

obviously this movie will be offensive to those who believe unquestioningly in the literal interpretation of biblical christianity, but i personally find nothing inconsistent with christian faith and a historical opinion that jesus might not have physically existed. then again, i'm a jewish atheist, so i guess i'm not the ultimate authority on christian theological dilemmas....

6. You know it's all comes down to a difference of opinion.
I go to church and saw the movie. I wasn't offended. I was more offended at the Passion of the Christ because of the bloodshed and violence I guess I am just wierd.

8. one of the many contradictions -
or more often and accurately, one of the many differences between christian theology and christian practice -- is this:
how can a religion based on the torment and torture of a jewish savior (and thanking that jew for enduring this) hold such hostility towards jews and their descendents, to the point that it repeatedly inspires christian masses to violence against jews?

i mean, ALL the key players were jewish, except the romans of course, who were jesus's killers and tortures. and yet, no one holds hostility for romans and their descendents (presumably the italians).

9. actually one of the best parts of the documentary
was the minute-by-minute, cataloguing of the violence in mel gibson's bloodfest.

they literally scrolled a time-line with a list of each act of violence against jesus.
basically, after the first 15 minutes or so, there at least one act of violence is pretty much every minute in the movie, often quite more than one.

7. People should always
keep an open mind, and welcome the sincere thoughts, opinions, and theories of others .... even when they pose serious challenges to our own thoughts, opinions, and theories. For example, while I believe that the prophet Jesus lived and taught the same Original Instructions that all of the great teachers through human history have taught, and that one can best understand those teachings by taking Jesus off of a stained-glass window and placing him in the context of humanity, your post has sparked my interest in watching the documentary. Thank you for that!

10. I got the movie
awhile back and have watch several times.

The interviews with Richard Carrier and Sam Harris are the best.

If you get a change try and catch Sam Harris on Cspan. He gave a talk late last year on his book "The End of Faith.
