"CBC News Sunday". What a great show compared to the garbage we have. |
|
I just got done watching the first hour of it, and as is the case in other times I've viewed it, it is just such a satisfying show. Part of today's first hour, which was in conjuntion with the BBC, was about the Muslim protests in Europe over some cartoons that demeaned Muslims. It didn't just give a one-sided viewpoint of it either, but puts you in the shoes of the people on both sides of the fence. Teaches you a little bit about empathy without even trying, something that is too often ignored on all of our corporate news broadcasts.
After that they had a feature which was about the life of Susanne, the lady who was the inspiration behind that song with the same name by Leonard Cohen, the poet/songwriter. Anyone who listens to Cohen's music knows that he has put out some special stuff. Anyway, the story followed the life of Susanne from the time she met Cohen in the 60's right up until the present, where she has taken homelessness and "made it an art". It showed her journey from Montreal to California where she now lives and back to Montreal for a visit to the places where it all started. Listening to the people who met her and know her, it's just so full of love and giving, that it's an inspiration and lets you know that there are still lots of good people out there, such as her current friends in California for example.
CBC News is out of Toronto, BTW, and I'm lucky that I get it as part of my cable package because I live close to the Canadian border in upstate NY.
We need more shows like this.

I flipped from CNN to CBC this morning to follow the Muslim cartoon riots. What a stark contrast between the immature vapid blatherings on CNN and the more indepth and thoughtful approach on CBC!

5. CBC is great...They used to be even better |
|
CBC television actually focuses on news and intelligent discussion and debate compared to the dreck here in the US.
My experience has been more with CBC Radio though. Their Sunday Morning show used to be awesome, with some amazing in-depth documentary reports. In recent years they've cut back on the documentaries, to cheaper in-studio interviews....But they're still light years ahead of NPR in terms of presentiung a diversity of views and depth.
