President can order a killing on US soil?
Newsweek
Feb. 13, 2006 issue - In the latest twist in the debate over presidential powers, a Justice Department official suggested that in certain circumstances, the president might have the power to order the killing of terrorist suspects inside the United States. Steven Bradbury, acting head of the department's Office of Legal Counsel, went to a closed-door Senate intelligence committee meeting last week to defend President George W. Bush's surveillance program. During the briefing, said administration and Capitol Hill officials (who declined to be identified because the session was private), California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein asked Bradbury questions about the extent of presidential powers to fight Al Qaeda; could Bush, for instance, order the killing of a Qaeda suspect known to be on U.S. soil? Bradbury replied that he believed Bush could indeed do this, at least in certain circumstances.

Truly scary stuff - the White House now believes they can order the murder of a "terror" suspect on American soil, without any due process whatsoever?

1. You know, we became fucked when the President, as commander-in-chief
and our armed forces both shifted from being, well, MILITARY to being law enforcement officials. We became very fucked at that moment.

Even FDR would have been in awe at the usurpation of other branches of government under Bush.

so that he could "be" a war-time prez.

So now this guy who ignored the Prez daily briefing -- and planes were allowed to fly where ever they pleased -- people died.

He then gets REWARDED.

So in the language of mystery writers -- WHO benefited from the 9-11?

Does this mean that da Prez can call anyone who doesn't agree with him a terrorist and this labeled this individual can be assassinated? This is so 1984.

AND the carrying this a step further . . . . so someone gets assassinated by da Prez but OOPS it was the wrong person. Never mind -- the NSA data miners can cobble together data to make ANYONE look like a terrorist.

We are so screwed.

3. What amazes me the most is that...
AMERICANS heard what he said at his SOTU speech--that the president has the power to put the constitution in the shredder when he feels he is acting in "the best interest of the nation."

Ya know, EVERY fucking American should have rioted over that one sentence. Instead, there are actually americans who agree with him.

I think that every high-school senior should be required to take a Constitution course under a PhD historian, so that they know exactly what the Constitution is, and why it's to be upheld by the president, not assaulted by the president.

What pisses me off even more is that Bush claims that he doesn't want activist judges legislating from the bench, yet he is an "activist" president who amends the Constitution at will, without required process.

One day, America will wake up, if there's anything left of America to wake up.
