Al Gore's World Television IWT on the horizon.
Thanks to "radio4progressives" for finding this link. I had heard about this last year but couldn't find anything recent.
World Television, IWT, has announced plans to launch a television channel by late 2007 that will incorporate citizens' voices into its programming mix. The group also launched a website and began soliciting donations to fund its effort. See: http://www.iwtnews.com/
It's being promoted as, "a commercial citizen journalism network with similarly styled programming being put together by former Vice President Al Gore"
2007 isn't soon enough but it's in time for 2008.
I plan to sign up and donate today myself.

1. Gore does Current TV....
I didn't know he was involved in this too. But I've seen the interviews with the people who started it, and I don't remember Gore being one of them. I'm confused.

2. Al Gore's project is Current TV, not IWT
I think they are entirely separate operations.

3. That's what I thought. BTW: I've contributed to IWT and will continue...
to support it. We desperately need an alternative to the Corporate Media.

4. I welcome any other helpful information....
...as I don't want to steer folks in the wrong direction. As far as his being responsible for putting together the programming, I did read that this morning.

Thanks

6. See this link:
.....

Note: IWT isn't related to Al Gore's channel "Current" which debuts in August and was originally called IndTV for Independent Television.

5. looking forward to seeing IWT
but they will need to have some BIG BUCKS behind them to have any appreciable impact. It's not enough for new-junkies on the left to be able to stream IWT over the web or podcast or whatever...we will do that anyway out of the desire for REAL news. It needs to offered on cable/satellite systems along with CNN/MSNBC/Fox as part of the "standard" package, not an additional subscription.

Ted Turner, George Soros or someone like that needs to get into the act in a big way either with IWT or with a for-profit LIBERAL alternative to the trash that masquerades as "news" on the idiot box.

7. Hmmmmmm
Consider me a bit of a capitalist but isn't it common for a startup company to sell stock to raise money to go into operation? That way people who believe it to be a good idea can become owners of the process and benefit from their initial interest if the idea turns out to be a good one.

Or is that idea out of style now?

8. Not necessarily
Many times companies will go public after being established for some time. It all depends on if they have a significant financial backer behind the scenes that can keep them stabilized (or so I'm understanding, at least).

I actually can't wait for IWT - I just hope they work out some plan to offer it on internet (either free or subscription based (ala NPR donation system). I don't subscribe to cable (because, well, most of it is crap) but I would gladly donate to see it streamed live on the web.
