Thom hartmann's XM broadcast this morning.
A guest (Mokhiber?) was reciting a HUGE list of major US corporations that are now owned by foreign owners. Even I was astounded. I was busy at the moment, and unable to jot down enough details to Google it. Anyone else here catch it and can supply me with the details?

1. I would also be interested.
I was at the farm cleaning the barn and had to stop and sit just for a moment and contemplate what I had just heard. His comment about the total flip in exports/imports since Reagan just astounded me.

7. I just did.
Hopefully, I'll get a reply by tomorrow. If so, I'll post it here (might even make GREATEST).

I was using an FM transmitter from my "sound system" (my computer), and listening in the kitchen. I was right in the middle of the elaborate coffee preparation ritual, and was unable to jot down the necessary notes. I'll be better prepared next time.

3. That total flip..........
includes the importation of food crops. The US is now a debtor nation in the growing of food too.

6. When you keep paving over farmland for housing
and sell the rest to ADM to grow specific cash crops for export, more and more people food gets imported..and people are now used to "out-of-season" fruits & veggies..

4. this was astounding to me
the number of major US companies bought by other countries. and yes, we the workers are still getting a paycheck, but where does the profit go? many americans would be surprised to find out they are working to create economic profit in France, Japan, China....

Also - the bit about the the biggest export of the US is: waste! which is sent to other countries like china, who recycle it and sell back to us in the form of manufactured goods.

what is one definition of a third world country? a country that primarily exports raw materials and primarily imports manufactured goods.

so we have become, in economic terms, a third world country.

"The United States will continue to lose global political influence because its government is running large deficits and going ever deeper into debt. In the 1950s, President Eisenhower routinely used the threat of calling in loans from war-devastated Europe to get his way. He threatened UK Prime Minister Anthony Eden with loan cancellations if the latter did not get back out of the Suez in late 1956. He threatened DeGaulle with loan cancellations if the latter didn't get France out of rebellious Algeria before it went Communist. Nowadays the US is a massive debtor nation, and has lost that kind of leverage with all but the poorest and most beaten-down countries. The US nuclear arsenal is relatively useless because it cannot actually be used, and the US military is bogged down in Iraq. America remains a superpower for the third and fourth worlds, but is often a helpless, pitiful giant as far as places like Western Europe and China are concerned."
