prone to carry a lot of cooties we don't want shared in the household. ;)
Terriers are very good to 'go to ground' after vermin. Coyotes do too, which is one of the reasons the prarie dog shears off all vegetation near burrow entrances. They like to make sure there is no cover for anything sneaking up on them.

Particularly in the Southwest. Prairie dogs can carry some very nasty forms of plague.
