The cartoonist of the Atlanta Constitution (I think) was on CNN this morning and he was kinda agreeing that the Mohammad cartoon was bad, was saying that, as a Catholic, he would be offended by a cartoon of a "deity."
Except that no one, not even the most devout Muslim would refer to Muhammad as a deity. He is not even the "son of god" that Christians view Jesus. He was a prophet. Like Moses.

On the "Simpsons" and things like that they have cartoon God and Jesus? They did on the first episode of "American Dad" showing Bush talking to God. I'm a Christian and it's never bothered me.

2. Not to mention that there are plenty of examples . . . |

In Catholic materials that give human form to "the deity." Admittedly most of them are probably (and this is an opinion, not a carefully researched fact) in teaching materials for the young -- or entirely allegorical -- but I don't think we're talking about something that's automatically offensive.

3. The way I read both Islam and Christianity |

(from my studies) is that only God is perfect.
But people in general can't cope with an abstract concept like God so they always humanise it in one way or another and focus on the messenger rather than the message.
