After reading Middledemocrat's post, something occurred to me... |
|
I think we need some sort of organization, kind of like big brothers/big sisters, but primarily for glbt youth. We need a hotline of some sort, so kids can come out (if they choose to) and be loved and supported as themselves and not treated like shit by religious, fundy parent-types telling them they are wrong... Even beyond a hotline, allowing glbt youth to spend time with adults that support them and care for them and want to see them succeed in life.
It really pisses me off to read these stories of parents, adult authority figures in schools treating gay youth like trash. Growing up is hard enough without that bullshit.
Does anything like this already exist anywhere? Or does someone need to start one?

1. in my experience, many gay men are extremely reluctant . . . |
|
to have any kind of involvement with gay youth . . . largely because of the false claims that could come from the parents or, in some cases, the youth themselves . . .

3. There's such a group in DC |
|
They run an afterschool drop-in center, teen club. They're called SMYAL: Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League: http://www.smyal.org.
