Conservatives Ask: Is Bush Still One of Us?

By Linda Feldmann, The Christian Science Monitor

WASHINGTON (Feb. 6) - From the moment George W. Bush began campaigning for the Oval Office in 1999, White House watchers have wondered what kind of president he would be: The Ronald Reagan of his generation? Like his father, the first President Bush? Perhaps even, in some ways, similar to Bill Clinton?

AP
Last week's State of the Union did little to allay some conservative pundits' concerns about President Bush's agenda.

Talk About It: Post Thoughts

This year's State of the Union address, which was panned by a chorus of conservative commentators, has intensified the debate about Bush's political philosophy.

The Wall Street Journal editorial page accused President Bush of playing "miniball," code for a Clintonian love of "small political ideas." Robert Novak reported private concern among congressional conservatives that Mr. Bush was moving toward bigger government. George Will called Bush's most memorable line - that America is addicted to oil - "wonderfully useless."

9. Agreed. But I get the sense that the ones
that don't aren't horrified by the same stuff we are.

I don't know if they care about the fundies that have taken over the party.

the cancer that has infected their party and out Government.

2. There is no way to answer either question. They do not apply
How would you characterize President Bush?
Too conservative
Not conservative enough
Just right
Which recent president's leadership style does Bush's most resemble?
Bill Clinton
George H. W. Bush
Ronald Reagan

Another case of propping up the empty suit.

4. I know--that is a ridiculous poll--
What is with AOL anyway? Have they not been paying attention? You can't compare the shrub to anyone, or any prior administrations, at all.

6. The Bush cabal is not conservative at all
Conservatives:

Balance the budget

Don't get involved in foreign wars unless attacked.

Don't approve of government intervention in private medical matters (abortion, Shiavo, etc)

Support the separation of church and state.

Barry Goldwater was a conservative republican.

The current crop of whackos who call themselves 'conservative' and 'republican' because Rush Limpballs has made the word 'conservative' and 'republican' words of praise, and has made the words 'liberal and democratic' into curse words.

Bush and his criminal gang are properly referred to as Extreme Right Wing Radical republicans and have NOTHING to do with conservative philosophy AT ALL.

Falling for the media clap trap labels is not a good thing

7. You are SO right!
I hate that they have turned liberal into a dirty word. The first time someone referred to it this way in my presence, I was frankly shocked. I wasn't aware that this is what it had all come to as I didn't listen to Rush or any people like him.

They are whackos. Real conservatives must be somewhere weeping at what has happened to their party.

I just don't understand their argument. How is he NOT conservative enough? Is he spending too much in their eyes? What's their beef?

21. That could be part of it, too.
I wonder if any of them are also resentful about this admin. marrying the party to the fundies. Given that originally conservatives seemed to believe in the seperation of church and state, that could be part of it...

15. Well let's see what conservative is suppose to mean
Smaller Government
Checks & Balances with spending

Well, Bush is hardly EITHER of those two so I would have to agree that Bush is not conservative enough!

19. I guess
if he actually was conservative in the original sense, we wouldn't have as many of the problems as we have.
