HRW Global Report for 2006, let's read & discuss

Since HRW has recently been used by some on the forum as a foundation for criticisms of Hugo Chavez in particular, I think it's about time DU reviews the report in total. Let's go through the whole thing.

Human Rights Watch World Report 2006

OK, here's how I'd suggest we do it. Everyone pick a different country to study. Read the report's national overview and associated articles from 2005 (and earlier if relevant), and start a sub-thread for discussion. Be creative in your choice of countries, and remember, only one subthread for Venezuela. Let's review and examine the materials, and get a sense of how HRW is looking at the world. Bonus points awarded to HRW if their subtitle statement that "U.S. Policy of Abuse Undermines Rights Worldwide" is supported by the nation-specific material, bonus points awarded to the USA if not.

Now it's clear that there are varying degrees of trust associated with HRW sources, and it's certainly possible that their quality of content may vary from nation to nation for various reasons. I propose that this be acknowledged up front, and perhaps we can come to some greater clarity concerning both overall and nation-specific quality of HRW's information if this exercise can be carried to completion.

Got yer country? Ready, Set, Go.
