Wal-Mart Question: How many Wal-marts are within 20mi from your home?
Nine

Nine fricking Wal-Marts within a 20mile radius of my home. I mean geez, that seems a little high if you ask me. Why should I have to worry that there isn't a place for cheap, sub-sidized junk sold by people who need a job and are willing to put up with the Wal-Mart abuses just to get a paycheck in this difficult job market.

In fact, if I double that radius there are TWENTY Wal-marts near my home.

Now, in that same 20 mile radius there are only 3 Target stores (and I will drive the extra miles to shop at a Target) and three K-Marts. Oh, and in that 20 mile radius with 9 stores I know of at least one more that is being built AND Wal-mart is trying to build one next to some sensitive wetlands in south Jersey that would also be in that twenty mile radius.

This sprawl is ridiculous and does Wal-Mart realize that building more stores will NOT get them more customers because more people are like me who refuse to shop at Wal-Mart even if one was built right next to my home!

66. Yeah, that pretty picture in your sig line....
he's gonna sprawl all over it with his backhoe - just you wait and see

Actually, it's not a laughing matter but sprawl is such a big issue here in Delaware because there is very little free space left so the last thing we need is another fricking Delaware. Must be nice to live in a state with such open spaces!

71. Lynne, I have lots of relatives in Maryland & Delaware -
They have the same complaint. My mom was born in Dover in 1917, and grew up on a farm in Chesapeake City. My brother was born (1958) in Elkton.

I haven't visited since 1989, but even then the sprawl in both states was shocking. I was still expecting corn fields, horse farms, roadside produce stands and pigging out on blue crabs.

Even Rehoboth wasn't the same, despite my aunt's cottage there.

Fairbanks has started its sprawl - we now have a Wal Mart, PetCo, Old Navy, Lowes, Home Depot, and even a Chili's restaurant.

I still shop at our home-town stores, including the hardware stores and such, even if they are more expensive. I'll put off a project before spending it on those who are ruining our scenic views and lowering the standard of living.

BTW, what did you think of Wal Mart deciding to dump their "day old" food and not give it to local food banks? Typical, hmmm? "Let 'em starve in the cold". Big Oil is "let 'em freeze in the dark".

77. We do have only one.
It isn't, yet, a "superstore" but locals in the know say it will be expanding into one soon.

I've been in it once, because my daughter-in-law works her 2nd job there, and has no home phone. I needed to confirm a holiday dinner.

There is little I can't get elsewhere from locals or statewide businesses, except groceries.

18. One. Exactly 20 miles away from me.
Which is the way I like it. Our little town (pop. 9,000) turned Walmart away.

Another small town near us got the Walmart, but the town has been hit hard with cutbacks and layoffs.
So, Walmart went there.

Want to know if your town is dying? Look for the new Walmart building site.

Our Wal-Mart opened in the same spot where a K-Mart closed because business was weak in that area. Ironically these are next to a Saturn/GM plant where layoffs have been bad the past couple of years. Makes you wonder how many ex-GM employees are now at that store

19. 13 and 2 Sam's
I refuse to shop there. Period. I am grateful my small city did not annex the parcel that WM owns about 1 mile from my house. I helped campaign against it.

Unfortunately, they still own the land if the County plays the right footsie, we'll get stuck with them any way.

I use two of the 7 or so Targets instead. The closest is still about 20 minutes away.

I keep praying that the proposed Costco (sp?) near me will get built.

Oh my! I only knew of one and I only knew of it because it is a "superstore" in a new stip mall next door to a hotel where I attended a conference last week.

Interesting question, though. I've not set foot inside a Walmart in 8 years or more. But, I was pressed into stopping in by some of the fellow conference goers and I figured I may as well look for my favorite brand of contact lens solution that I've been having a hard time finding. Well, I don't know if my impressions are consistent with anything, but I just felt such an oppressive feeling in that store, I couldn't wait to get out.

It was new, clean, well stocked, and big, but for my 2 bottles of contact lens solution, I waited in line almost an hour! (My friend had several items and was determined to buy them). People didn't smile and the check out person just had that zomby attitude. I felt like I was constantly under surveillance and expected any minute for some burly security guy to come hassle me out of boredome--or someone else among the "chattle."

I was nice and tried to say something pleasant to the girl at the checkout, but I may as well have kicked her. She just kept up her routine, like an automaton, ignoring anything but the never changing routine. As I looked around and realized that everyone HAD to wait because they felt they couldn't afford to go elsewhere to shop, the whole WalMart lie became crystal clear. Just as Bush has bamboozled so many about the Repugs protecting their safety and exploiting their fears, Walmart has effectively exploited the demoralization of those too tired to do more than just survive. I'm sorry for those who waste their money on poor quality goods that must be quickly and repeatedly replaced. I'm sorry for those who work there and feel they have no choice. I'm extremely sorry for those exploited garment workers overseas whose dignity has been sacrificed on the altar of WalMart.

As for me....Never again....

One of them is about to be abandoned because they're building a bigger one RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET!

Only one K-Mart and only one Target (and a Target Distribution Center that brought over 100 semi-decent paying jobs into the community)

On edit - if you go out 40 miles there are 5 (sheesh - I live in Iowa - how many do we need?)

My old locale in central Oklahoma had 11+ within 20 miles, and it was fairly difficult to get by without giving into walmart now and then.

about 10 miles from here, but it is the only one in a county of approx. 65,000. Next closest blight is at least an hour drive away. We also have a Kmart. That is it for large retail, unless you count Longs and Rite Aid (one each). The locals are trying to stop MallWart from building a super center and closing its existing store. That would kill the local grocery stores.

They built one about 3 years ago and then I was driving down that same road...just about 2 miles north I noticed another one. I thought for sure there was an exhaust leak in my car and I was hallucinating, because surely there is no reason for Wal-Marts to be that close.

Right now I can think of 5 Wal-Marts close to me, but I have no idea how many are within 20 miles, but I'm guessing a bunch

62. Several, plus Sam's. But we have a "good" WM and a "bad" WM
Sorry to say it that way, but that's how they're referred to. I live in a pretty lilly-white suburb of Hartford. On one edge of town we have a "bad" Wal Mart, which is filthy, poorly merchandised, cramped aisles, over-crowded all the time, horrible personnel, and mostly lower income customers. As a result, there are more anti-theft devices, guards, etc. More like a giant Dollar Store in the inner city.

But across the proverbial tracks, in a "nice" section of town (I hope I don't run out of euphamisms) there is a squeaky-clean, department-store style Wal Mart, complete with nice garden center, etc. Modern, clean, bright. It would be a pleasure to shop there, if it weren't a Wal Mart.

The two are basically at opposite ends of a three mile stretch of road. And Sam's is a mile from the nicer WM, on the same road. There are many others in the area.

5 within 10 miles.

11 within 20 miles.

20 within 50 miles.

63. Zero.
But, I have two WalMart Super Centers, one Sam's Club, and two WalMarts within 40 miles of my house.

I maket about 75% of my groceries and liquor store purchases from a military installation about 30 minutes away. WalMart and Sam's Club have some things cheaper than the Commissary, so I split the shopping between them to make my dollar go the farthest. I save enough that I can get good wines and Scotches from a top-drawer liquor store, on occasion.

I don't turn the other cheek.

74. 10, 8 of which are supercenters
Incredible. Thousands of people lost their homes when Wal-Mart rigged city council elections and built yet another supercenter in New Orleans. The majority of the citizens voted against it, but Wal-Mart replaced our city council and changed the law. They were then able to tear down historic buildings and evict thousands of poor blacks, some of whom have died as a result.

Stupid assholes shop at Wal-Mart.
