Citizens Impeachment Commission to make 2006 the "Year of Impeachment."
ImpeachPAC today announced the formation of a Citizens Impeachment Commission to make 2006 the "Year of Impeachment."
Submitted by davidswanson on Mon, 2006-01-02 13:24. Impeachment
http://www.impeachpac.org/?q=node/192

"We are honored by the broad support for impeachment from this distinguished group of true American patriots," said Bob Fertik, President of ImpeachPAC. "Impeachment is not a 'fringe' position, as the Bush Administration would like Americans to believe. With a recent Zogby poll showing Americans support impeachment hearings by a solid majority of 53%-42%, there is far more support for impeachment than there is for the War in Iraq," Fertik said.

"Despite three rounds of Iraqi elections, 845 brave young Americans died in Iraq in 2005, only 3 fewer than the 848 lost in 2004. Also 30,000 to 100,000 innocent Iraqis have been killed in the wake of the U.S. invasion. George Bush and Dick Cheney are personally responsible for each of those deaths, because they deliberately lied to Congress and the American people to start this disastrous and never-ending war," Fertik added.

ImpeachPAC is a political action committee that supports Democratic candidates for Congress who support the immediate and simultaneous impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney for their Iraq War lies. In less than two months, ImpeachPAC has raised nearly $50,000 and endorsed its first candidate, Tony Trupiano of Michigan.

ImpeachPAC's efforts have forced the Washington establishment to admit that the many misdeeds of the Bush administration - including the latest revelation of warantless wiretapping of American citizens - are valid grounds for impeachment. The question now facing Washington is not whether Bush and Cheney committed impeachable crimes, but whether Democrats and Republicans in Congress will fulfill their solemn Constitutional duty to investigate and prosecute those crimes, as proposed in December by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) in H.Res.635.

The goals of the Citizens Impeachment Commission are:

3. Call Me A Cynic, But I DOUBT This Will Ever Fly Too High Off The
Ground! After EVERYTHING that has happened since "the corrupt ones" took over our country, they have YET to be held accountable for ONE scintilla of deception!

Then there is the fact that even IF we rid ourselves of the IDIOT, we STILL HAVE Darth Cheney to deal with!!

When and IF I see this is TRULY going to go somewhere I will back it wholeheartedly! I'm STILL waiting for my FITZMAS!!

8. I Donated $100 When ImpeachPAC.org Launched
and haven't regretted it for a second.

I will be the first to admit that they have a long haul (slog) ahead of them in terms of building enough momentum within the Beltway and on Main street for impeachment and expulsion but quite a bit has changed since we Progressives first started talking about the issue in real terms.

The mainstream news media have awakened like a sleeping giant to KKKarl Rove's mendacious running of the administration. Sure, the press continue to publish Republican talking points as fact but they're doing a lot better than before and have begun running genuine investigative reports again.

Beyond that is the fact that the wall of silence is cracking in the United Kingdom. When Blair faces and loses a no-confidence vote, we'll see so many new leaks over as to make the second half of 2005 on our side of the Pond seem calm.

Lastly, many Republicans in Congress who bought the lies of 9/11 and the "Colossal Intelligence Failure" excuses about Iraq hook, line and sinker are reticent to do so about NSA domestic snooping. In an election year, they are down right jittery.

When we retake control of both houses of Congress this time next year, the atmosphere on the Hill will be quite different and we'll have the good folks at ImpeachPAC.org to thank for helping rally support to eject the chimp.

5. Hear, hear!
See Jonathan Schell's article The Hidden State Steps Forward in The Nation.

<snip>

Previously when <Bush> was caught engaging in disgraceful, illegal or merely mistaken or incompetent behavior, he would simply deny it. ...

But in the wiretapping matter, he has so far exhibited no such vacillation. Secret law-breaking has been supplanted by brazen law-breaking. The difference is critical. If abuses of power are kept secret, there is still the possibility that, when exposed, they will be stopped. But if they are exposed and still permitted to continue, then every remedy has failed, and the abuse is permanently ratified. In this case, what will be ratified is a presidency that has risen above the law. ...

With Bush's defense of his wiretapping, the hidden state has stepped into the open. The deeper challenge Bush has thrown down, therefore, is whether the country wants to embrace the new form of government he is creating by executive fiat or to continue with the old constitutional form. He is now in effect saying, "Yes, I am above the law--I am the law, which is nothing more than what I and my hired lawyers say it is--and if you don't like it, I dare you to do something about it."

Members of Congress have no choice but to accept the challenge. They did so once before, when Richard Nixon, who said, "When the President does it, that means it's not illegal," posed a similar threat to the Constitution. The only possible answer is to inform Bush forthwith that if he continues in his defiance, he will be impeached.

If Congress accepts his usurpation of its legislative power, they will be no Congress and might as well stop meeting. Either the President must uphold the laws of the United States, which are Congress's laws, or he must leave office.

6. I think the best we can hope for is for 2007 to be the year
as long as the repukes who put party before country are in complete control of all branches of government, there is not much of a chance for it in 2006 IMHO. 2006 is the year to do a clean sweep of their ilk out of the house and senate so articles of impeachment can be brought forth in the house immediately after the Democratic majority are sworn in January of 2007. That is if the repukes don't steal the election again...

I do think that support of impeachment can be something for Democrats to campaign on.

It's nice that after several months of obscurity, ADS (David Swanson and John Bonifaz) are finally getting some DU notice.

There is an event that is more immediate, the nationwide OUT OF IRAQ / IMPEACH * FORUMS this coming Saturday. There are >60 planned nationwide.

If not already registered, go to www.afterdowningstreet/event and find one near you. If there isn't one, there is an area to create and publicize a meeting. All the reference material you will need is available at the site. If I can do it, so can you.

John Bonifaz is speaking at the Cambridge event, and two fantastic folk musicians, Evan Greer and Owen Plant, are donating their time and talents to the cause. For Massachusetts / New Hampshire / Rhode Island DU'ers, see the details at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=158x7402

Everyone else should go to www.afterdowningstreet.org/event

KEEP ON!

P.S. Bought "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine today after realizing it takes more then just typing it, we all need to participate, too.

Good Job all over at downingstreetmemos for busting their butts on all these issues.

10. The R's will only go as far as Censure. Is there a movement afoot ?
Just asking. The R's still control Congress. If any wish to continue, I'd imagine a bolt for a censure movement if put out cautiously. What deals are being made right now ? What point will Dems NOT settle for ?

Inotherwords, will Dems fight for impeachment in the post '06 world or settle for censure ASAP, and possible deals pre '06 elections ?
