Rove Threatens Republican Senators...
Support The President On Wiretapping Or Else...

KKK is promising photo-ops and appearances with the blivet to those who remain loyal! By the time we get to Nov., they’re going to be begging for him not to appear

“The White House has been twisting arms to ensure that no Republican member votes against President Bush in the Senate Judiciary Committee’s investigation of the administration's unauthorized wiretapping.

Congressional sources said Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove has threatened to blacklist any Republican who votes against the president. The sources said the blacklist would mean a halt in any White House political or financial support of senators running for re-election in November.

"It's hardball all the way," a senior GOP congressional aide said.

The sources said the administration has been alarmed over the damage that could result from the Senate hearings, which began on Monday, Feb. 6. They said the defection of even a handful of Republican committee members could result in a determination that the president violated the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Such a determination could lead to impeachment proceedings.” Cont…

1. It's now or never for the GOP Senators to shake off the shackles. n
They have a chance to regain their freedom. They may lose their jobs now but they can always come back once the Bush cabal is behind bars.

57. blacklist could backfire
this is assuming that some of GOPers, who are targeted, stand up and show some balls instead of quietly stepping back into the chorusline

incumbents have an easier time of being re-(s)elected than challengers have of being elected

by blacklisting incumbents - Rove is throwing the field open for two "new" candidates. Given the mood of the country regarding Congress and Dems versus Repugs - the Dems have an advantage, which puts a new repug at a disadvantage from the git-go

the blacklisted repugs could always spin this as "the bush* admistration has placed me on a blacklist. I consider this a badge of honor because I am standing up for your rights as an American citizen.... I will not be a puppet the political whims of corruption and manipulation. My first and foremost priority is doing what is right for the country, and if I feel the president is wrong, then by golly I'll oppose him"

if they really had some balls - they could resign from repug party and run as independent or ***gasp*** a democrat

89. alot of GOP candidates would benefit from slamming bush
in blue and purple states for sure. Those people in the whitehouse have abandoned conservative principles and some GOPers are starting to notice. I was listening to a little-know conservative radio program last night and they were trashing bush's budget. This kind of stuff is happening more and more on radio and it's time someone from the other side runs this up the flag pole to see if anyone salutes. I think alot of people will respect a little backbone and not just democrats.

119. Yes, I've been convinced that BLACKMAIL gotten through spying and
perhaps by entrapment (for example, with photos with male or female prostitutes or with documented kickbacks) is one of the primary methods used by the Bushies to keep GOPs as well as Dems, media leaders and others toeing the fascist party line.

So when we read about Rove threatening nasty but legal political non-support for those who dare to disagree with the Administration, I am also seeing what is happening behind the scenes, with Rove threatening them with the dirt they have hidden away.

27. why ELSE would they deliberately avoid FISA?
surely the FISA judges wouldn't say "no" to wire-tapping an al Qaeda suspect's phone. Why would the Bush Admin think they would automatically refuse?

Edited on Tue Feb-07-06 12:47 PM by EVDebs
along with DA Gonzalez's non answers show there is NO LIMIT to the Bush War Powers, in direct violation of the War Powers Act of 1973 ! Congress cannot delegate their powers to Bush either, so the AUMFs of Sept 14, 2001 and Oct 2, 2002 are illegal also.

UNLIMITED warmaking powers, vesting now in 'Bush's determinations' are unconstitutional on their face. These are self-evident facts people, you don't need SCOTUS and Alito or Roberts (who btw would have ruled on REX84 planning while in the Reagan administration re the executive orders that created these programs of 'suspending the constitution' constitutionally of course) !

All was done for pretext for war. The truth will come out and the Republicans will suffer for it, as they well deserve. Oh, btw, the war is based upon thirty year old plans

spying.

I have assumed for a long time that blackmail was the single major way that the Bushies kept their puppets in line. When the NSA Spygate story broke, my first question was "why did it take until now for this to become public"?

31. And someone on the CSPAN calls made a good point too
They said how Bush and the neocons keep saying the more we talk about this the more "the enemy" will know how we do things and this person said how they did this all to themselves because if they didn't want "the enemy" to know they should have gone within the law so it wouldn't have been exposed.
So of course I'm sure they already know how to tell when they're being spied on. Doy. Or they could've gone to the House or Senate with a closed session and try to change the laws or something. But they did this all to themselves and now they're whining claiming "security."

33. It's this one:
"FBI called in on Hill
Bob Cusak and Jackie Kucinich | November 8
The Hill - The FBI and Capitol Police are investigating the vicious attack of a top Senate staffer at her home last week amid concerns that the assault might be related to her work on the Finance Committee.

Emilia DiSanto, chief investigator for committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), arrived at her suburban Virginia home after work Wednesday about 6:30 p.m. As she was unloading belongings from her car, a 6-foot-1-inch white man dressed in black struck her repeatedly with an unidentified object believed to be a baseball bat.

After she screamed to her family inside the house, the assailant fled. DiSanto was transported to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, where she was treated for significant upper-body injuries. Nine staples were needed to close her head wound.

(Hat Tip: Talking Points Memo)"

http://www.agonist.org/section/US_Congress/4

This particular article doesn't go in depth like some others do (I'm too lazy to search for a good one - sorry). It's being investigated as a work related attack, possibly related to the Abramoff investigation.

Edited on Mon Feb-06-06 11:55 PM by Marr
A power-hungry executive branch can play all the "hardball" it likes with their own party- they'd only be defeating themselves. If many of those GOP Congress members decided to stick to principle and actually do their duty, what would the Bush Administration do? Blacklist them, assuring a loss of Republican seats in Congress- perhaps even losing the majority and empowering their *real* oppostion? They'd be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Fortunately for the Bush Administration, all of these GOP politicians are moral cowards.

In all of your political ads, you could tout your blacklisting as a testament to your character and good judgment. My name is Bob and I'm running for Congress. Did you know that Karl Rove blacklisted me? It's true. So you know I'm trustworthy and honorable. I don't have the approval of the mafia-wanna-be fools who are currently running the show."

Bush is a lame duck; he's down in the polls; his budget cuts will be hard for Republicans to get behind in an election year; and I doubt that he will be recruited by many candidates to stump for them.

This might be a good atmosphere wherein moderates can assert themselves.

43. Bush is safe because Republicans are craven corrupt cowards.
The GOP has long put power ahead of principle, including Constitutional principle. So Bush can count on his henchmen in the GOP to help him cover up his crimes.

In fact, he can count on them to do all they can to make themselves believe that what is obviously a crime isn't even as serious as a blowjob.

Gonzales wasn't anymore under oath than the oil company executives were during the last whitewash.

And Dems like Vilsack are already rushing to enable the far right, just as they've done for the last 11 years! LOL.

What a farce this country has become. It deserves its fate.

And the other nations of the world deserve the healthy dose of schadenfreude that they're going enjoy in the next decade.

This could turn out to be the defining moment of PNAC's over-reach.

The Republican Specter (head of the House Judiciary Committee) is solely responsible for calling for this investigation.

The Democrats on the hill aren't the only ones who are tired of being rolled over.

The Repubs control everything down to the voting machines, so they are no longer answerable to the people. They have repeatedly changed the rules to make sure the minority party has no power, which means one of two things... they're insane and believe that they'll never lose power, or they know what's going on and have made sure that they'll never lose power.

To somehow disassociate themselves from the most corrupt administration in American history. Republicans in close races would do quite well to avoid any " help" from the likes of Bush, Cheney, Rove and the entire den of liars and crooks. This certainly seems like an idle threat on Rove's part. DeLay made the mistake of overestimating his political clout long after his number was effectively up. If GOP legislators are dumb enough to listen to this ethically-challenged would-be Mussolini, then they certainly deserve what's coming to them.

83. Ironic, eh?
I posted this on another thread, but if events progress along their present course, the WH will be radioactive by November, and no Congressperson will want to be caught DEAD with shrubco's support for re-election. (e.g., hasn't Santorum already declined to appear w/ shrub recently?)

I still assert that it will have gone further by that point: Repukes will have to openly call for his impeachment in order to have a snowball's chance in hell with their constituencies.

Maybe I'm a tad too optimistic. However, envision wholesale conspiracy indictments against the WHIG. Envision false-statement charges against Darth Cheney. Envision un-indicted co-conspirator status against shrub.

It's a long time until November.

91. This is Why...
Republicans need to stop supporting Bush. They claim that our side is *so* awful, & yet look at the things their side is guilty of! Maybe the Democrats' side isn't perfect, but the Republican side is much, much worse. Somehow, we need to get people to see that the true evil is in the Republican Party. It's really frustrating right now. The Republicans are so fascist these days, & yet people love them & bash us. We need to find a way to get people to see the truth, but it's just so hard.

114. It's a good thing.
Four years ago, every republican was quick to jump when Karl snarled, "Jump!" Two years ago, they would bite when Karl demanded they bite. Today, there is a growing division, and although it is not necessarily for the correct reasons -- because they know in their hearts Bush is wrong -- it is still a good thing. The more republicans question Bush, the angrier the White House response will be.
