The resolution below is co-sponsored by members of the PDCW 46. This resolution is intended as timely performance feedback to Senator Cantwell regarding her recent failure to support the filibuster of the Alito nomination. It is the "bookend" to a resolution urging our senators to filibuster Alito, which the 46th District Democrats unanimously passed at their January 2006 general membership meeting. If you're a member of the 46th District Democrats, please attend the February 16th meeting to vote your support of this resolution. If you are not, and you agree with the message of this resolution, please share it with your friends, colleagues, and districts. The more groups that speak out on this issue, the bigger the effect.
Resolution to Censure Senator Cantwell for
Her Refusal to Support the Alito Filibuster
WHEREAS, at our January 19, 2006, membership meeting, the 46th District Democrats unanimously passed and forwarded a resolution to Senators Cantwell and Murray urging them to “use any means at their disposal to stop his {Alito’s} confirmation, including a filibuster”;
WHEREAS, the January 19 resolution provided numerous reasons why the confirmation would pose a threat to our fundamental rights and freedoms provided by the Constitution;
WHEREAS, the filibuster, in effect, provided the only means to stop the confirmation of this extremist judge;
WHEREAS, Senator Cantwell refused to support the filibuster, voting “Yes” on the January 31 cloture motion, contributing to the failure of the filibuster on the Alito nomination;
WHEREAS, the Senator’s refusal to support the filibuster was especially unexpected and deplorable in light of the Senator’s repeatedly-stated concerns about the dangers of extremist judges, and her vote to close debate rendered futile her eventual “No” vote to confirm Alito’s nomination based on his extremism;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the 46th District Democrats issue a resolution of censure to Senator Maria Cantwell, declaring in no uncertain terms their profound disappointment in the Senator’s refusal to support the filibuster as well as the belief that her action will likely have an important, detrimental effect on her base of support.
