Can people recap the Carter/Clinton speeches? |
|
No tv here and I can't glean much from the threads. What did they say that everyone is so excited about?

2. President Carter spoke. truth. |
|
It's such a rarity these days. He went after the wiretapping, the victims of Katrina, social and economic injustices...
And COMPLETELY ignored Little Lord Pissypants!
It was a truly patriotic moment, IMO.
Peace.

:wow: I don't know if Chimpy is bright enough to understand just how much of a slight that is, in the South, since he's not really a Texan. I hope that was caught on film.

13. He brought up the illegal wiretapping and |

mentioned how MLK had himself been eavesdropped upon, and been targeted by the government.
I was stunned. I had been in tears at that point - end of an era, etc. But his remarks were so unexpected that I missed GWB's reaction (he was sitting right behind the podium and you could see his reaction to various speakers.)
It was an extraordinary thing. And there was just thunderous applause...

9. I missed Carter, but Clinton talked about Coretta as a mother, a woman... |
|
He was very moving.
He talked about what a strong woman Coretta was. How she could have said after Martin's death, "I'm going home", but that she chose her path - to keep fighting. He wondered what the children of Coretta and Martin, were thinking at this funeral... Did they remember how their mother read to them from the Bible? Did they remember how their mother told them of their father's death?
He said that we need not be afraid to follow our calling. We need to be strong, as Coretta was. Hillary gave a speech too, but honestly, she's not the same speaker. It was a nice speech but I can't really remember much...
It's going to be up on CSPAN re-aired at 8pm. Sorry! Wish I could remember more!

22. he was REAL- he spoke about her not being simply an "icon" but |
|
the human aspects of her, the very real, "I've had it" kind of feelings we ALL have- You caught it well Spuddonna- Try to catch his words tonite- they were so precious, and moving. Having buried both parents, and so many friends, and relatives, his words brought me to tears- in a way no other speaker had- because he spoke to the folks who bear the heaviest loss- and spoke as one who truly understands the weight of grief, and the courage it takes to keep on keeping on-
We are a lesser world for the loss of Mrs. Coretta- and a lesser nation for having leaders who rely on speech writers, to put words into mouths which haven't got a clue nor do they care- Bill spoke his heart- if nothing else, you can always rely on him for that-

18. Clinton got up without notes and in his intro said he and GHW bush |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-07-06 04:22 PM by jean
are going around the world, 'doing good,' and thanked 'the president' (shrub) for having them do it.
This came after Rev Joe Lowry and Jimmy Carter had each smacked W upside the head, with him sitting right in front of them. Clinton acknowledged the Bushes and gave them some minor props.
Clinton cracked a joke about GHW Bush, who had lost a page from his short speech and quickly said, "This may be your lucky day, I've lost a page ..." He spoke right before Clinton, and joked that he used to keep score on his desk of the times Lowry came to the White House, and it was something like Lowry 21 Bush 3.
Clinton referred to that joke and said it was pretty good 'zinging Lowry' like that, coming from one of the 'Frozen Chosen,' a reference to Bush having said he's Episcopalian.
The body of Clinton's speech was about Mrs. King's legacy and that it will be very hard for her kids to carry on. He wants us all to help them and carry on with that work in whatever way we can. He spoke of her choosing to take up MLK's legacy immediately and going to Memphis to lead the march for the poor garbage workers. She could have retired to a private life and raised her kids and no one would have faulted her. Instead she took the hard path and kept working until she passed.
You'll have to find a way to see or hear replays. The parts of the service I heard on the radio were spectacular and inspiring.
