That is really dispiriting but true nonetheless. The ecologist, Paul Erlich, said in the 1960's, or so I recall (paraphrasing and name dropping from an ever decreasing memory...I need more RAM methinks) "As an ecologist one lives alone in a world of wounds". As someone who cares about people I live in a world where few people actually get it and most of them post on DU.
