Misinformation on Warrantless Wiretaps Continues

I had hoped to start the new year with an upbeat and optomistic blog. However, in light of the mine blast in West Virginia, our first order of business is doing everything we can to help the trapped miners and their families.

On an unrelated note, the steady drip of misinformation continues from the Administration. Could any of you understand what the president was trying to say yesterday (see NYT story)? The president tried to assert that the NSA only wiretaps incoming calls without warrants, but the evidence is all to the contrary and Bush's own staff had to explain that he didn't really mean that. This comes on top of yesterday's blockbuster in the Times that the stand up James Comey (who appointed Fitzgerald) had refused to ok the warrantless wiretaps and even AG Ashcroft in the hospital refused to buckle to pressure, for some reason. What we are seeing with the wiretap scandal is a microcosm of everything we wrote about in our "Constitution in Crisis" Report -- pressuring the media, mistating the facts, usurping all power to the executive, deriding critics as unpatriotic, using the resources of the Administration to obtain retribution against the whistleblowers.

Since my conman is a repuke, I plan to ask him to co-sponsor so as to show the Republican Party is not condoning lawlessness. I will also ask for a reply in writing -- should be interesting.

12. babylonsister, I'm wondering if the person was trying to say...

(extremely without grace) that because it's not the permalink, if people would go back to this a month from now for some reason, what you're referencing might not be on Conyers' home page. If the permalink was provided, it could still be accessed. (I'm sure that you're aware of this, but I think that was his/her point. Why it couldn't be said politely, I can't even fathom.)

However, I understand that you were referencing two different things (the mining incident and the spying incident), so that's probably why you referenced the home page itself.

The person's response was totally inappropriate, as you know.

It's stooooopid -- and lazy -- not to do it right. I go around collecting the real links when I find such stupidity and usually (not always) posting them to the threads, and reminding people about them (them = REAL LINK or permalink) and it just doesn't get any better here. There was a time not that long ago when NO ONE EVER posted a half-assed blog link like that. No one. Now the place is filled with people who do nothing but, and they're farkin' PROUD of it.

Fuck that.

For those people who object to my tone, two things:

(1) Go ahead, Alert on my post and

18. With all due respect, who made it your job to do this?

I understand that it's not the way you want things to be, and ideally, permalinks would be used. However, you're going to give yourself health problems if you get upset over things like this all the time. I think that you should just LET IT GO rather than calling people stupid and lazy.

Maybe it would be better to occasionally post a civil thread reminding people about the permalink issue. It may be hard for you to believe, but not everyone is even aware of the fact that there are issues with links not being permanent. (When one thinks about it, it makes sense. But until a person's aware of the issue, they wouldn't even think of it.)

I get the links for myself, and I usually post them as a contribution to the threads I'm on. It feels real passive-aggressive when I don't take that extra step, ya know?

So why don't YOU post a civil thread about their importance? I've seen others do exactly that -- some of the respected scholars and researchers of DemocraticUnderground, some of whom don't even bother to come her any more or if so not much (and is there any wonder why?) -- and they just sank. No one cared, no one bothered.

But perhaps with your charm and grace, YOUR threads would have better luck?
