1. I don't need to do too much thinking about it.

The heroe's of the right, druggies, felons, bigots and liars.

2. That's correct
I remember when Rush first started being syndicated around the country. I think I listened to him for about 5 seconds and realized all that was coming out of his mouth was hate, and never listened again.

6. Sorry but I think you're wrong...
Listen to your enemy, he will give you the keys to victory.

22. I had the same experience
I listened to Rush ONE time in my life. I had to turn the channel after a few minutes because the things he was saying sounded so disgusting, vile, childish and hateful that he was making me sick.

12. You poor things!
And I mean not only you and you hubby, but the scared kitty, too!

I have two dogs who would eat any cat I could never own, as a result - so the worst I get is a grumpy snarl from my 13-year-old cocker when I pick him up and squeeze his tummy a bit more than he'd like (I have to pick him up and put him on the bed at night - he's just to old to make that jump any more, even though he's not overweight).

My other dog - she's a 1-year-old - only licks my face to death. LOL.

13. The sad thing is that I know of a few people who are extremely...
intelligent and really good people, and they've really been poisoned by this stuff. I swear that there must be some kind of subliminal message that's being sent through the airwaves as well. (I'm only partly kidding.) Same for Faux News. I just can't put myself through listening to this stuff even if it would help me to better understand the enemy.

14. they play to the fears of their listeners.
We are in an era of great economic uncertainty and a lot of folks have a great deal of anxiety. These radio /tv shows, imo, work as an escape from the fears by translating fear into anger (emotions that are often very closely related) and then projecting the anger onto "the other" (as in outsider/them/...) In fits of anger one is relieved from the unfocused/diffuse anxiety/economic insecurity of what lies in the future for themselves and their loves one. Think of it as a really weird sort of opiate.

15. This really makes sense, salin. Thanks for explaining...
the psychological workings behind this madness and why right wing radio works on seemingly "good" people.

16. it is hard to understand...
for example... who in their right mind believes that there is a movement to forcibly prevent people from uttering the words "Merry Christmas"? But this mouth frothing story pushed by rw figure head seems to have bagged a whole lot of followers. Only explanation, imo, is that somehow the hook and experience does indeed let people temporarily lose their capability for rational thought.

Unless, of course, I just missed all of those huge news stories about specific efforts to prevent people from saying those two words... how was it done? Forced gags put on people? Cutting out tongues? Surely we must have missed such a story - for otherwise how is anyone being attacked? They are perfectly able to say those words how ever they want where ever they want how many times they want - at whatever time of year they want. But yet... millions have been not only eating up the story... but have repeatedly been acting out in places of businesses like true boorish *ssh*les... berating sales people.. making huge scense... have they lost their minds? I think, to a degree, at least temporarily... they have.

17. My sister is an Evangelical Christian who is a liberal on most issues.
However, she's a rabid believer in "In God We Trust" being on money, "under God" being in the pledge, and prayer being in public schools. (I think that she somehow subconsciously views this as her proving her love of God and Jesus to God and Jesus.)

While I was home visiting my family at Christmas, she started grumbling about the Merry Christmas issue. I told her that I don't know of one liberal person who wants to stop her or anyone from saying Merry Christmas. (I'm sure that there are some, but I don't know any.) I told here that she should also understand that other people should also have the right to say Happy Holidays is they wanted to do so. I told her that I felt really bad for sales people who are in the middle of this entire thing, and that, if I were them, I wouldn't say either one. I also told her that the right was using it as a distraction from the real issues. She thought for a few seconds and said that I was right about the distraction part. Whether that would have worked on a conservative or not, I don't know. However, I was happy that it worked for her. I hope that she'll be looking for similar things in the future from the right.

9. IMHO Rush, Hannity, Coulter etc have done more for to divide this country
than just about anybody alive. They are the cause of so much hatred in our country and it's going to destroy US if we don't find a way to stop it.

21. If memory serves me correctly,
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 07:07 AM by Karenina
the radio hate-mongers were rigorously prosecuted and jailed for incitement. They were instrumental in fomenting the horrific violence between the Hutus and Tutsis. More detail than that my brain will not retrieve this instant...

I just don't "get" the US anymore.
