GHW Bush made that comment after realizing he lost one of the pages to his eulogy. I heard this on the radio and 'got it' - he was rifling around looking for that lost page and said 'this may be your lucky day' meaning his eulogy would be shorter. People laughed.

and people did laugh--more than he expected them to, i think, as the ensuing laughter and applause appeared to take him by surprise :)

When I saw it, it struck me as vaguely inappropriate--the kind of joke you tell at an accounting convention, not at a funeral. People did laugh, though, after a pregnant pause. I think it started as an uncomfortable laughter that grew into a bit of a mocking laughter.

Your point about context is, of course, correct and well taken :) :hi:
